The Manitoba Youth Centre (MYC) is currently searching for a highly motivated Indigenous Language Teacher to join their team. Qualifications:


Essential:




Experience with planning and implementing positive social experiences and opportunities, which facilitate an understanding of a variety of Indigenous languages and cultures Ability to design, develop and facilitate an integrated culture and language program while working cooperatively with staff and volunteers nurturing understanding and promotion of Indigenous language and culture for youth and staff Experience working in collaboration and committed to working with Indigenous communities and Indigenous Traditional Ceremony Provider's both internal and external. Proficient in one or more indigenous languages is required. Including fluency in both written and oral An understanding of the unique dynamics that exist within the First Nations, Inuit, and Metis cultures Extensive knowledge of the history and culture of Indigenous Peoples including First Nation, Metis and Inuit. Including the Truth and Reconciliation calls to action Excellent motivational skills Strong communication skills, both written and verbal Strong interpersonal skills Effective problem solving and decision-making skills



Desired:


Successful completion of one (or more) courses related to the education of special adults, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered Prior teaching or related work experience with youth in a special education and multi-grade setting Special Education Certificate Bachelor's degree in Indigenous Studies and/or a certificate in Teaching Indigenous Language for Vitality Knowledge of justice system Experience teaching in Indigenous Communities


Duties:


Functioning as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, the teacher provides education programs and intervention inputs required to prepare youth sentenced under The Youth Criminal Justice Act for successful integration into the community. The Indigenous Language Teacher will be part of a growing team. You will collaborate with Indigenous Traditional Ceremony Provider's, Occupational Therapists and Mental Health team including agencies to determine how they can best support the sharing of Indigenous Language, traditional values, knowledge, ceremonies, traditions, and practices. You will be working with youth in custody and lead the Indigenous language program. This includes assessment of learning needs and styles, development and implementation of relevant programs, use of computers to individualize programs and ongoing evaluation/reporting of student progress while meeting proper and accepted reporting and documentation guidelines within expected time frames. You will involve students in the development of individualized programs that teach to their strengths and interests, as related to Indigenous language instruction. You will promote personally and socially responsible choices and decision-making skills, use group dynamics, structured learning strategies, cognitive restructuring and relapse prevention in meeting the risk and needs of the youth residing at the Manitoba Youth Centre. The school year at Manitoba Youth Centre runs similar to that of the public school system.
