Indigenous Language Fluency (Non-Teaching) Faculty
at the Merritt campus and invites applications from qualified individuals. This position will commence as soon as a qualified candidate is selected.
Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Dean, The Indigenous Language Fluency (Non-Teaching) Faculty member supports Indigenous language revitalization within community contexts through their work with the Indigenous Language Certificate and Diploma programs at NVIT. This faculty role does not include classroom instruction. Instead, it focuses on strengthening community-driven language initiatives, coordinating experiential learning activities, and supporting the respectful integration of Indigenous knowledge systems across program operations.
The faculty member works closely with the NVIT Community Education Department and community partners to build and maintain strong relationships with the Indigenous communities that NVIT supports in language revitalization. This includes ensuring that program activities reflect community priorities, cultural protocols, and language revitalization goals.
The role oversees non-instructional components essential to Indigenous language learning and community engagement. These responsibilities include coordinating mentor-supported activities with first-language speakers, organizing community-based practicums or project opportunities, supporting capstone or community-driven language initiatives, and facilitating culturally grounded language events. Regular engagement with Elders, first-language speakers, community representatives, students, alumni, and NVIT program staff is central to this work.
As a non-teaching faculty position, the role emphasizes:
building and sustaining relationships with Indigenous communities
collaboration with NVIT Community Education to support community-led language revitalization
coordination of experiential and community-driven language activities, and program scheduling
non-instructional student support and mentorship
advocacy for Indigenous language revitalization across NVIT programs
integration of Indigenous community priorities and cultural knowledge into program initiatives
This position upholds Indigenous-led approaches to language revitalization and supports the long-term sustainability of community-based Indigenous language learning pathways within NVIT's Indigenous Language Certificate and Diploma programs.
Minimum of a bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Indigenous Studies, Linguistics, Education, Language Revitalization) or equivalent combination of education and significant community experience.
Demonstrated experience in Indigenous language revitalization within community contexts.
Strong understanding of Indigenous cultural protocols and respectful engagement with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and first-language speakers.
Experience working collaboratively with Indigenous communities and community organizations.
Ability to build and sustain relationships with communities involved in language revitalization.
Experience coordinating community-based programs, projects, or cultural/language events.
Strong organizational and project management skills.
Effective communication skills with diverse community members and partners.
Familiarity with Indigenous language certificate and diploma program needs.
Ability to work closely and collaboratively with NVIT Community Education and internal program staff.
Commitment to Indigenous-led and culturally grounded approaches to language revitalization.
* Ability to travel to communities for relationship-building and program support as required.
