POSITION SUMMARY:
The Indigenous Health Education Specialist will support the development and implementation of the Indigenous Health Strategy as part of the Indigenous Health Team at St Joe's. The primary focus of this role will be to deliver Indigenous Cultural Safety Education across the hospital, revise policies and procedures to address anti-Indigenous racism, and support initiatives and projects described in the Indigenous Health Strategy. Measuring the impact and effectiveness of all assigned initiatives that support the Indigenous Health Strategy is a critical component of this role. The Indigenous Health Education Specialist will work collaboratively within the organizational development and the EDI team as well as within the Indigenous Health Team, and with key partners to design, develop, and deliver strategic and impactful Indigenous Health Equity programming.
QUALIFICATIONS:

• An Undergraduate Degree required in a related field which can include Indigenous Studies, Adult Education, Human Resources, Law, Health Programming, Communications, or Organizational Development or related field
• Masters Degree is preferred
• Certification in Indigenous Health, Communications or Human Resources is preferred
• Minimum 3 years of practical and work related experience is required
• Experience developing and implementing leadership learning strategies and solutions
• Demonstrated successful experience in effecting change and transformation in a unionized environment
• Preference will be given to candidates with lived experience of Indigeneity with an understanding of barriers faced by Indigenous populations in the Hamilton region
• Experience in identifying and addressing Indigenous patient health equity barriers
• Minimum 3 years progressive experience in working with Indigenous communities or healthcare or academic environment
• Canadian Certified Inclusion Professional (CCIP) is an asset
• Membership with the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion is an asset
• Canadian Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation an asset, with additional courses/training related to Indigenous inclusion
• Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) certification, and/or Indigenous approaches to conflict resolution courses would be an asset
• Bilingualism in English and an Indigenous language an asset
• Understands the principles Indigenous Health is able to design, develop, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of in-class and e-learning activities or programs
• Strong leadership, collaboration and interpersonal skills with the ability to build effective working relationships with clients and colleagues
• Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities, navigating institutional resistance and leading health equity and anti-oppression work and/or demonstrated experience supporting positive change in Indigenous inclusion
• Understanding of Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility of Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Human Rights Case Law and other related legislations and codes
• Demonstrated consultative approach with an inclusion mindset and the ability to effectively build relationships across all levels of the organization
• Strong conceptual critical thinking and design skills as applied to policies, programs, and processes
• Demonstrated experience in effecting change and transformation in a unionized environment
• Change management certification is an asset
• Ability to assess client needs, develop and deliver appropriate Indigenous Health interventions and needs
• Ability to coach and support on matters of Indigenous Health
• Has excellent communication and facilitation skills and is able to effectively lead a variety of meetings with multiple levels of internal clients
• Excellent organizational, problem-solving and systems thinking skills, skilled in the use of Microsoft Office suite of tools (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
• Must be flexible and adaptable

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Some responsibilities include the following:

• Conducts environment scans and needs assessments to identify emerging trends and issues for existing Indigenous Health programming, policies and activities
• Support the implementation of the Strategic Indigenous Health plan and framework committed to addressing Indigenous health, increasing Indigenous Cultural Safety and Indigenous inclusion at St. Joe's
• Develop and implement Indigenous Cultural safety learning and training programs and tools that engage staff at all levels, including design, communication, implementation, training, and on-going support
• Conduct needs assessments to scope organization Indigenous Health priorities that impact people and culture
• In collaboration with the Indigenous Health Team, establish Indigenous Health learning objectives and guidelines for developing and delivering Indigenous Health learning programs in alignment with the Indigenous Health Strategy
• Evaluate and monitor the effectiveness and establish measures of success of key assigned initiatives and leverage analysis to improve needed Indigenous Health interventions

Collect and analyze voluntary workforce socio-demographic data (as a part of tracking measurement of diversity progress) and interface with key stakeholders to support the advancement of Indigenous inclusiveness in the organization * Support building of holistic, sustainable and effective Indigenous Health learning content in partnership with the Indigenous Health Team and EDI Team

• Support needs around creating awareness and education to embed the Indigenous Health lens in staff and patient health equity and inclusion initiatives
• Provide guidance and support to staff and leaders on Indigenous Health matters for Indigenous Health intervention based on needs assessment, research and fact finding
• Support recruitment for collecting and analyzing data (quantitative and qualitative)
• Create engaging Indigenous Health awareness campaigns and communication in partnership with key community partners, leaders, committees and teams such as Communications, Recruitment and Public Affairs; including building Indigenous Health pages on the intranet and content
• Review, monitor and track progress of Indigenous Health initiatives
• Collaborate with Indigenous Health team to identify risks, solutions and opportunities
• Works in partnership with key partners - both internally (such as Indigenous Health council, Affinity Groups, Patient Family Advisory Council, HR and Staff committees) and externally (urban Indigenous community, Six Nations of the Grand and Mississaugas of the Credit), community members and networking groups to build strategic and impactful Indigenous Health initiatives
• Collaborates with partners (clinical and non-clinical) across the organization to identify issues and determine ongoing solutions, including selecting, designing, implementing, and evaluating effectiveness of Indigenous Health support tools
• Provides expertise to key partners on all matters related to Indigenous Health , programs, services, processes and policies and support establishment of Indigenous Health standards and guidelines as needed
• Creates and implements change management in partnership with the EDI and learning team that maximize employee engagement, ensuring smooth adoption of changes impacting employees and the organization
• Acts as a liaison with all levels in the organization in the delivery of Indigenous Health consulting support
• Works closely with Executives, Directors and Managers to coach, plan and implement Indigenous Health change initiatives and strategies to support the Indigenous Health Plan Strategy through policy review/change/implementation
• Work collaboratively with clinical and non-clinical leaders to embed Indigenous Health principles and goals into broader Indigenous Health strategies and processes based on effective and best practice recommendations
• Consults with key internal and external partners as needed on establishing connections with broader research and health equity initiatives with regard to Indigenous data sovereignty
• Provides guidance for workplace investigations involving human rights concerns or Indigenous Health related matters
• Acts as a champion of Indigenous inclusion (including Health equity) and actively work towards identifying and dismantling systemic barriers across the organization in addition to community engagement
• Helps roll out organization-wide processes that support Indigenous Health events programming and support implementation (online and on the ground)
• Collaborate with the OD and EDI team to review and monitors the effectiveness of Indigenous Health related initiatives
• Partner with Volunteer team and wellness coordinator to embed Indigenous Health lens in other staff/community programming
• May participate on committees, teams and programs with regards to furthering the Organization's commitment to Indigenous Health
• Works in collaboration with other professionals within the People and Organization Effectiveness (P&OE) team and supports specific units/department for specific Indigenous Health interventions
• In collaboration with Indigenous Health Team, manages complex and sensitive Indigenous Health Projects cross-functionally and collaboratively
