The vision of the Barrie Native Friendship Centre is to improve the quality of life for all Indigenous people in the area, regardless of legal definition by providing a gathering place which promotes unity and wholistic healing within the community at large. This is accomplished through a network of culturally based programs, services and teachings.
Job Purpose
The Indigenous Family Support Program Coordinator for CAPC/CPNP will provide responsive groups to pregnant women and new moms, and to parents with children birth to six years of age, who face barriers such as low income, low literacy, lack of transportation etc. Groups will be provided in partnership with the Barrie Native Friendship Centre within the guidelines of the Community Action Program for Children (CAPC) and Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP). The Group Facilitator will promote the groups and complete intakes for new participants.The applicant will work as part of a team in a dynamic environment that works collaboratively to optimize relationships with team members, BNFC members, and our organizational partners.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Plan and implement meaningful one-to-one and group-based activities designed to meet the goals of participants and program objectives.
Evaluate programs and services on an ongoing basis to ensure the delivery of group-based, culturally relevant programming.
Assist in all or designated parts of planning, organizing, recruiting families, flyer development, delivering workshops or other parent education activities as needed.
Debrief weekly with co-facilitators, guest speakers, and children's programmers.
Ensure that outcomes specified for each group session and/or workshop as well as individual participants have been achieved.
Promote awareness and ensure access to the program through a variety of outreach efforts and promotional activities.
Complete intakes for potential CPNP and CAPC participants within the specified guidelines.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date participant files, consent forms and statistics.
Provide wrap-around services and a strengths-based action plan for each individual direct-service user.
Organize food supplements, childcare and transportation, within guidelines.
Evaluate the groups on an ongoing basis and implement program modifications or changes where necessary.
Provide leadership in community efforts to address the barriers facing CAPC/CPNP families (such as poverty, low literacy, transportation etc).
Accurately report and ensure all program objectives are being met in accordance with agreements.
Promote and incorporate Indigenous languages, practices, and beliefs throughout all programs and services.
Maintain strict confidentiality.
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain positive relationships with community agencies, businesses and others.
Provide leadership in community efforts to address the barriers facing CAPC/CPNP families (such as poverty, low literacy, transportation etc).
Advocate and raise awareness on issues commonly experienced by CAPC/CPNP families.
Working collaboratively with Indigenous Healthy Babies Healthy Children programmers and other BNFC programs and services.
Working and contributing with the team to organizational wide special projects (ie. Community events, Food Baskets, etc.) when needed.
Representing BNFC when required in committee meetings on behalf of BNFC's Executive Director.
Working collaboratively with BNFC Combined Court Worker on family court matters, where appropriate.
Assist with planning and implementation of BNFC Children's Camps and PA Day Activities, when required.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
Post-secondary education in Indigenous studies, health promotion, Early Childhood Education and/or a combination of an equivalent and relevant education
Strong knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, Indigenous youth engagement and community outreach
Knowledge and experience working with urban Indigenous children and families.
Exceptional knowledge of Indigenous historical and contemporary issues
Minimum 3-5 years of demonstrated and related work experience within an Indigenous community or organization
Experience with computer software, including software for data collection.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Strong organizational, research, data analysis, and report writing skills.

Specific employment conditions are specified in an employment contract with the Executive Director.
Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
Flexible work schedule including some evenings and weekends
Valid Ontario Driver's License, use of own insured vehicle
CPR and AED Certificates
You will normally be required to work based out of 175 Bayfield St Barrie, ON L4M 3B4. The hours of work are 9am to 5pm with possible evenings and weekends as required. You may be required to be mobile for the purposes of carrying out your job duties.
Physical requirements
Working in an office-sharing setting and working within the community. Supporting individuals and families in a group setting. Planning and facilitating programs from start to finish, at the friendship centre and within the larger community. Working with vulnerable sectors (babies, children, individuals with mental health & addictions, etc).
