Pay Grade

The annual salary range is $70,437- $112,872 (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications, experience, and the placement criteria of Article 14 of the NICFA Collective agreement.


Position Summary


The Indigenous Education Curriculum Developer is responsible for providing continuity and leadership in the development, refinement, and implementation of Indigenous-led, distinctions-based learning initiatives at North Island College, aligned with the goals and commitments outlined in Working Together: North Island College's Indigenization Plan (2021-2026). The successful candidate will lead the development of digital learning content, activities, and resources that support NIC employees through Journeying to Reconciliation, an institutional learning experience delivered through the Brightspace learning platform.

This role is grounded in long-standing, relationship-based work with Indigenous Nations in the NIC service region and requires stewardship of existing curriculum, learning modules, facilitation practices, and community-led commitments currently in place. The position ensures continuity of relationships, institutional knowledge, and ethical obligations connected to Indigenous-led curriculum that has been developed, piloted, and refined in collaboration with Nations, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous education governance bodies.

The position works in close collaboration with leadership and designated representatives from each partner Nation, the Indigenous Education Council, NIC Elders in Residence, Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous Education staff, and other internal stakeholders to ensure learning remains Indigenous-led, accountable, and grounded in local protocols.

The successful candidate will lead the development of content, activities, engagements, and resources for the creation, delivery, and review of online modules that can be utilized by college departments. The modules will explore local First Nation histories, culture, language, impacts of colonization, and current context of the NIC service regions. The position will require extensive collaboration with the Indigenous Education Facilitator, NIC Elders in Residence, and community knowledge keepers to develop the content for the online modules. The modules will explore the pre-colonial history, language and culture, specific impacts of colonization, local examples of resilience, and the current day context of the following Nations and Peoples:

K'omoks First Nation Ligwilda'xw Kwakiutl and Kwakwaka'wakw Tseshaht, Hupa?asath and Nuu-chah-nulth Nations


The modules will also include activities to encourage learners to explore their roles and commitments to support Indigenization and reconciliation. The successful candidate requires the following competencies for successful performance of the duties and responsibilities:

Duties & Responsibilities


The successful candidate will:

Lead the ongoing development, refinement, and stewardship of Indigenous-led digital learning content, activities, and resources for NIC employees, ensuring continuity with existing curriculum, commitments, and relationships. Collaborate closely with the Indigenous Education Council, NIC Elders in Residence, Knowledge Keepers, the Indigenous Education Facilitator, and Indigenous community partners to ensure learning materials are grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing, local protocols, and ethical engagement practices. Lead the piloting, facilitation, and iterative refinement of learning modules with live participant groups, incorporating feedback from Elders, Knowledge Keepers, Indigenous community partners, and learners. Apply decolonia

, anti-racist, and trauma-aware pedagogical approaches to curriculum design and facilitation. Independently lead complex curriculum development projects, manage timelines, coordinate collaborators, and produce progress summaries and reports. Ensure learning experiences align with universal design principles, metacognitive learning strategies, and best practices in adult and workplace education. Navigate complex and sensitive learning environments with care, accountability, and professionalism, supporting learners through discomfort while interrupting harm and maintaining Indigenous-centred perspectives. Continue the creation and review where appropriate of content for local First Nations digital core-competency modules sewing together content, components, perspectives, and learning experiences from variety of content experts. This includes web-ready content including videos, presentations, resources and handouts to support participants' learning. Work collaboratively throughout the whole process with the Indigenous Education Facilitator, First Nations' Elders and knowledge keepers to build the course, revise components, and enhance areas based on feedback.


Required Education & Experience


1. Able to plan, design and develop the digital courses within the timeframes and organizational structures of post-secondary education and local First Nations.

2. Background and understanding of local First Nations in the NIC service region, including: culture, language, history, protocols, and current-day context.

3. Proficiency with computer applications, digital platforms and word processing.

4. Proven digital instructional abilities, using creative and motivating approaches to stimulate learning.

5. Able to successfully present content and course design in a digital format.

6. Skills in organization of work, planning, project management, time management and resourcing.

7. Able to work flexibly, independently, and successfully in a team structure.

8. Able to apply universal design principles, metacognitive learning strategies and understanding of how we learn to supporting the development of learning experiences.

9. Able to thoughtfully and appropriately embed Indigenous perspectives into course design.

10. Able to reason analytically and problem-solve independently.

11. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

12. Excellent presentation, consultation, and small and large group change management-focused facilitation skills.


Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities


The successful candidate will demonstrate:A comprehensive background and applied understanding of local Indigenous ways of knowing and being, Indigenous pedagogy, and distinctions-based approaches. A minimum of three (3) years' experience supporting Indigenization, reconciliation, and/or Indigenous education initiatives within post-secondary or comparable institutional contexts. Minimum 3 years' experience in developing Indigenous online curriculum. A minimum of two (2) years' experience teaching or facilitating Indigenous-focused courses or professional learning at the post-secondary level. Demonstrated experience designing and developing curriculum components, including learning activities, engagements, communications, resources, and content organization within digital or online environments. Strong leadership skills, including the ability to independently lead projects, manage progress, coordinate collaborators, and produce clear summary documentation. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to foster a collegial, respectful, and supportive learning and work environment. Demonstrated ability to approach curriculum design and facilitation from a decolonial and anti-racist perspective. Demonstrated experience working closely and respectfully with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, scholars, and Indigenous communities in ways that are accountable and protocol-informed. Proficiency with digital platforms, instructional technologies, and standard computer applications. Certificate or Diploma in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Demonstrated anti-racist and anti-colonial facilitation experience, including the ability to hold discomfort, interrupt harm, and navigate difficult conversations without recentering settler fragility. Deep familiarity with North Island College's institutional culture, governance structures, and Indigenous education history, enabling effective internal facilitation that respects local context, tensions, and responsibilities.
