Indigenous Early Learning and Childcare Coordinator
Location: INUVIK, NT
Position Status: FULL-TIME (37.5 HOURS PER WEEK)
The Indigenous Early Learning and Childcare Coordinator (the coordinator) is a member of the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in early learning team. The coordinator is responsible for leading, managing, and coordinating the development and implementation of IELCC centers and Aboriginal Head Start (AHS) programs in the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Settlement Area (GSA).
Role Responsibilities

  • Frequently consults with GSA communities to guide the development of IELCC centers and AHS programs that meet the specific needs of communities.
  • Identify professional development learning opportunities for staff.
  • Coordinates and supports IELCC centers and AHS programs to ensure programs are run according to NWT Licensing Regulations.
  • Promote and implement programs that are culturally sensitive that reflect Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in culture and language.
  • Evaluate program activities and seek improvement opportunities.
  • Builds effective relationships with key community partners to ensure coordination of programs and services align with Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in values and objectives of the communities.
  • Ensures the completeness and filing of all files (staff and children).
  • Creates and maintains policy and procedure manuals for the operation of the program.
  • Tracks and manages budgets in order to complete reports to funders.
  • Identifies and apply for grants to support program activities.
  • Provides recommendations for the purchase of equipment and material for childcare centers and AHS programs.
  • Manages program budget and reports monthly expenses to the Manager of Early Learning and Language.
  • Provide reports as required: staff evaluation, status of program development, parent surveys, community involvement.

Role Qualifications and Competencies Requirements
  • A post-secondary and/or university degree in linguistics, language revitalization, or a related field.
  • Completion of a Diploma in Early Childhood Education, plus two years of working in an early childhood center.
  • Valid Early Childhood Educator Certificate.
  • Knowledge of the overall Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Tribal Council\xe2\x80\x99s mandate, goals and objectives and the political and social environment in which the GTC programs and services are offered.
  • Preferred understanding and a working knowledge of the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement.
  • Knowledge of strategic planning, development, and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of NWT licensing regulations is preferred.
  • As this is a highly sensitive position, verification of identity and a criminal records check are required.
  • Travel, including to remote communities within the Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in Settlement Area of the Northwest Territories, will be required.
  • A preferred knowledge of Gwich\xe2\x80\x99in values, beliefs, and practices, and able to represent these in their daily work.
  • Knowledge of program planning and evaluation methods or willingness to learn.
  • A Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License.

Compensation
A competitive salary range and an additional benefits package will be offered including a northern allowance, health and dental benefits, and generous leave entitlements.
