Position Summary

Reporting to SVNB's Director of Strategic Development and SVNB staff as needed, the Indigenous Community Response Advisor will work with community and government stakeholders and networks province-wide to support improve community responses to Indigenous survivors of sexual violence.

Using a trauma-informed approach, activities will involve the identification of needs, issues, resources and gaps relating to the support of those affected by sexual violence in Indigenous communities. The Indigenous Community Response Advisor will work alongside SVNB's provincial team meet the needs of Indigenous survivors and communities.

This is a fulltime, term position subject to funding, job performance and meeting minimum qualifications.

Duties/Responsibilities

The Indigenous Community Response Advisor will provide leadership in 3 main strategic areas to address the following key activities:

Strategic Area 1

Community Development

Work with Indigenous communities to develop community responses to sexual violence.

Coordinate and attend community meetings.

Coordinate the Community Collaboration Grant program.

Work with existing community based sexual violence services to enhance capacity within their communities.

Facilitate partnerships between Indigenous-led initiatives and non-Indigenous organizations to strengthen collaborative efforts in addressing sexual violence.

Advocate for systemic changes by sharing insights from Indigenous communities with policy-makers and stakeholders.

Strategic Area 2

Intervention

Explore intervention and service delivery models.

Assess feasibility and sustainability of these models.

Provide guidance on integrating cultural practices into service delivery models to enhance accessibility for Indigenous survivors.

Collaborate with Indigenous knowledge keepers and service providers to co-develop intervention strategies grounded in traditional knowledge and trauma-informed care.

Strategic Area 3

Professional Development and Training

Provide specialized training to Indigenous and non-Indigenous service providers who work with Indigenous people affected by sexual violence.

Assess and respond to training needs in communities.

Create or adapt training materials in collaboration with Indigenous communities to reflect their unique cultural contexts and needs.

General Duties:

Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives, incorporating feedback from Indigenous communities to refine and improve approaches.

Support community organizations and networks and seek opportunities for growth and new initiatives

Provide ongoing progress reports to funders.

Adhere to the most current SVNB staff policy.

Perform other related tasks as needed.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be of Indigenous descent with close ties to First Nations communities.

A degree or diploma in community development, Indigenous studies, social work or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations, with a demonstrated understanding of the unique challenges faced by Indigenous survivors of sexual violence.

Knowledge of gender-based violence, particularly sexual violence; feminist principles and a demonstrated commitment to the eradication of gender-based violence.

Extensive knowledge and experience in sexual violence prevention, interventions, education, policy, and research is desired.

In-depth understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and community dynamics, including the impacts of colonization, intergenerational trauma, and systemic barriers.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt messaging for diverse audiences.

Written and spoken competence in English is required; competency in Wolastoqey and Mi'kmaq languages is an asset).

Spoken competence in French is an asset.

Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including community members, service providers, and government representatives.

Ability to facilitate workshops, trainings, and community discussions in a respectful and engaging manner.

Project management skills, including planning, organizing, and coordinating initiatives.

Advocacy skills to support Indigenous survivors and raise awareness of their needs within larger systems.

Possesses a current Criminal Record Check including a Vulnerable Sector Check

Possesses a valid driver's license and has the ability to travel province wide.

Hours of Work

Monday to Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm. (37.5 hours per week) Flexibility in this schedule and the availability to travel province-wide will be necessary in response to the initiative's needs and requirements.

Remote work may be considered outside of the Fredericton region.

Renumeration

Annual salary - $53,335 - $65,186 plus benefits, depending on demonstrated experience and qualifications.
