INDG 400 Black-Indigenous Alliances
There is a long history of ties between Indigenous peoples and people of African descent in Canada and across the Americas. The Black enslaved worked alongside Indigenous panis slaves in Quebec, and in Nova Scotia, descendants of African American loyalists lived alongside members of the Mi'kmaw nation. There is also a longstanding relationship between African and
Indigenous peoples in wider Americas, including in the Caribbean, the region where most people of African descent in Canada have roots. Today many Black Nova Scotians, including those living in Montreal, claim Mi'Kmaw ancestry, and in the 1960s, significant efforts were made to forge an Indigenous-Black solidarity movement. As recent work on the subject shows, these efforts were disrupted by Canadian state security in collaboration with its U.S. counterpart. Today the issue of settler colonialism and who qualifies as a settler has raised pointed questions about the place on non-Indigenous peoples on this territory, including people of African descent.
