Functional Role



As Hydrovac Operator you perform non-destructive excavation around sensitive underground piping and cables to expose underground utilities and pipelines by using pressurized water and vacuum excavation systems. You meticulously follow safe work practices and safe job procedures to maintain both the integrity of underground infrastructure and a safe working environment.

Responsibilities include equipment maintenance, site preparation, and safety compliance. You keep the unit organized and clean, maintain accurate driver's inspection reports, and provide safe, professional and reliable service to our customers. You perform all work to regulated organizational, as well as provincial and federal standards, procedures, laws and regulations and adhere to the highest standards of safety.

Qualifications



Valid Class 1 or Class 3 BC drivers' licence with air brake endorsement Clean driving record Manual transmission Ground Disturbance II 2 years operating hydrovac equipment or similar preferred

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities



The Hydrovac Operator will demonstrate the following abilities in their daily work:

Able to operate hydrovac and all associated equipment Familiar with size and weight restrictions Strong safety focus Performs hazard assessments before any work begins Ability to lead/oversee swamper Excellent oral communication Knowledge of but not limited to:
(i) Traffic protection

(ii) Fall protection

(iii) Electrical awareness

(iv) Equipotential bonding and grounding

(v) Confined spaces

(vi) Excavation safety

(vii) SDS

Working knowledge of construction site safety, truck maintenance and road safety regulations Reliability, trustworthy Organizational abilities Judgement and problem-solving skills Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to requests from others Ability to work as part of a team or independently Attention to detail Physically demanding:
(i) Frequently rotating (right/left) - check/see mirrors, blind spots

(ii) Dexterity; eye/hand and eye/hand/foot coordination

(iii) Repetitive movements - body rotation, feet and hand controls

(iv) Gripping and reaching

(v) Sitting for long periods of time

(vi) Requires bending, squatting, crawling and climbing

(vii) Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium weight up to 50 pounds

(viii) Climbing - stairs/ladders; getting in and out of equipment

(xi) Working outside in all different weather conditions, including extreme cold and heat

Accountability



The Hydrovac Operator is accountable to the Construction Administrative Coordinator (Dispatch) who may delegate authority.

Hours of Work

Generally, 7:30am - 4:00pm, Monday - Friday Overtime required during busy construction periods
Compensation

$35.00 to $40.45 per hour - depending on experience Extended health and dental benefits after 180-day waiting period

Accountabilities



The Hydrovac Operator is responsible for the following:

Be equipped with appropriate personal safety gear and always maintain:
(i) hard hat

(ii) hi-vis vest

(iii) steel toed boots/rubber boo

(iv) safety glasses/full face shield

(v) water resistant clothing

Perform pre/post-trip inspection daily, including:
(i) Checking and adjusting brakes

(ii) Physically check over the truck

(iii) Check the insurance is valid

(iv) Fuel the truck

(v) Ensure trip book is filled in

(vi) Truck should be clean, inside and out

(vii) Grease truck and trailer (weekly)

Be always prepared for CVSE roadside inspection, including:
(i) Paperwork must include your vehicle inspection form.

(ii) Pre-trips must include everything you find until it is fixed. Even if the mechanics aware of the fault. For example, "ABS indication" on dash.

(iii) Make note of condensation inside headlamps.

(iv) When greasing truck, also have thorough inspection with flashlight.

(v) Automatic slack adjusters - make sure to do full brake applications of 100 PSI throughout the day, i.e. when stopped at a light.

(vi) Check tires throughout the day. Check between drive tires for rocks. Check for nails in tread.

(vii) "Lever test" acceptable in BC but measuring stroke length/travel a better test for slack adjuster.

Demonstrate CME Personal Protective Equipment standard by attending morning meeting in hard hat, high-vis safety vest, steel toed boots, eye protection, gloves Checks daily work schedule; if no Hydrovac work, alternate trucking work will be assigned Provide leadership, guidance and mentorship to assisting Swamper Ensure Hydrovac Swamper understands and maintains standards and procedures Completes daily paperwork in an orderly, logical, and legible fashion including all pertinent information Create and maintain operational documentation, on an ongoing basis Operates truck in a safe and legal manner, and performs basic maintenance All maintenance, other than that performed at the start and end of a shift, needs to be authorized by the Chief Mechanic If equipment is down for repair during your shift:
(i) You must check in with your supervisor immediately

(ii) This is not deemed as personal time and you may be assigned alternative tasks - you are expected to perform work that moves the company forward, while on company time

(iii) If the repair is going to take a significant amount of time and there is no alternative work, your shift will end

(iv) Ensure you have clear instructions for your next shift at work, from your supervisor, before leaving the site

Promptly reports any accidents or injuries to management Keeps dispatch informed of status regularly Ensures customer satisfaction by remaining courteous and friendly Maintains personal safety gear at all times (hard hat, hi-vis vest, steel toed boots) Maintains personal foul weather gear at all times (rain gear, rubber boots)
