Your Challenge

Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada\'s largest research and technology organization.

We are looking for a System Engineer (Research Council Officer) with a background in hydrogen technologies and codes and standards to support the Automotive and Surface Transportation Research Centre. The selected candidate would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.

NRC Automotive and Surface Transportation (AST) Research Centre has the mandate to advance product and process technologies for producing more efficient, safe, affordable and environmentally-responsible ground vehicles, and to deliver engineering solutions to complex technology challenges facing today\'s surface transportation industries including automotive, heavy and specialized vehicles and rail.

The primary responsibility of the candidate is to support the goals of NRC and the Research Centre in providing Canadians access to research, scientific knowledge and technologies for innovation in ground transportation. The candidate will work in a team environment with researchers and technical experts in unique research facilities and in the field. The candidate will be responsible for developing, conducting, coordinating and reporting on research and engineering projects related to hydrogen safety and hydrogen codes and standards.

Duties and responsibilities will include:
  • Author, review and critique research plans, detailed work plans, technical reports and technical papers.
  • Assist in the development of research proposals including collaboration with industry partners, scope definition, elaboration of research activity timelines and funding/budget estimates.
  • Interpret and analyze data/results and develop robust conclusions and recommendations.
  • Research and assist in the composition of literature reviews.
  • Present research findings in technical forums including conferences, seminars, working groups, etc.
  • Travel will be required.

Education

Masters degree in Engineering or Science.

Bachelors\'s degree in relevant education combined with significant experience will be considered.

Experience
  • Extensive experience designing and integrating hydrogen systems into ground vehicles.
  • Extensive experience working in the area of hydrogen codes and standards.
  • Experience working with hydrogen and familiarity with hydrogen lab safety.
  • Experience applying hydrogen safety knowledge and safety strategies to the design of ground vehicle operations.
  • Experience with risk assessment tools such as FMEA, FTA, or others.
  • Extensive experience performing data interpretation/research analysis.
  • Experience presenting research findings at scientific conferences and through peer-reviewed journal publications.
  • Extensive experience in conceiving, initiating, leading and executing new ideas and research projects.

Technical Competencies
  • Solid understanding of how hydrogen systems and fuel cells are safely integrated into ground vehicles.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the sub systems of hydrogen systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the required training for personnel to work with hydrogen.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the risks of hydrogen and the ability to apply safety strategies to mitigate the risk.
  • Strong research and writing skills to develop research ideas and support documentation of research deliverables including proposals.
  • Ability to execute research projects including engaging external partners and seeking out funding sources both internal and external.
  • Knowledge of project management principles and practices.
  • Ability to write technical publications, proposals, and review technical reports in English.

Compensation

This position is classified as a Research Council Officer (RCO), a group that is unique to the NRC. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $57,220 to $161,754 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions.
