Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager, Facilities Operations, under the direction of the leadhand, the incumbent performs a wide variety of tasks related to the installation, repair and maintenance of all University heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment. Also performs installation, maintenance and repair of University buildings, other types of equipment and systems.

Accountabilities:

  • Respects and responds to direction given by leadhand(s);
  • Contributes and participates in the effective use of the Quality Control System;
  • Performs regular maintenance checks on operational equipment/mechanical rooms;
  • Performs installation, maintenance and repairs on University buildings, equipment and systems where certification is not required and it is within the training and limitations of the incumbent;
  • Initiates, coordinates and collaborates with outside service providers and other bodies/agencies with which the University deals;
  • Performs life safety regulatory inspections and repairs, i.e. emergency eyewash and showers; fire extinguishers;
  • Performs all duties related to HVACR, including new installations and renovations;
  • Installs, services and maintains heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment including ancillaries as per schedule, to the limitation and certification of the incumbent;
  • Installs, services, and maintains gas fired equipment including ancillaries as per schedules and to the limitation and certification of the incumbent;
  • Installs, services , and maintains refrigeration equipment including ancillaries as per schedules, to the limitation and certification of the incumbent;
  • Services, maintains, and operates chillers, cooling towers, and related equipment to the specified schedule
  • Solders, welds (arc or oxyacetylene)
  • Assists in establishing preventative maintenance schedules;
  • Accesses, monitors and controls Building Automation System;
  • Prepares estimates for work orders;
  • Requests, orders or picks up required material from suppliers in order to complete the job;
  • Works with sketches and blueprints;
  • Performs other related duties;
  • Performs minor duties of other trades where certification is not required and the work does not exceed own limitations;
  • Ensures adequate supplies are in stock for emergency repairs and preventative maintenance;
  • Understands and complies with all Departmental Policies and Procedures;
  • Prepares any reports and maintains records required for control, audit or reporting purposes;
  • Flexibility in hours of work will be required to work evenings and/or weekends to accommodate work volume. Adequate notice will be provided;
  • Required to be part of an on call rotation.
Qualifications:
  • Must possess a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Certificate
  • Must possess a Certificate of Apprenticeship, HVACR
  • Must possess Gas II Technician Certificate
  • Must possess a current Ozone Depletion Program Certificate
  • Extensive experience with heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration, and gas fired equipment
  • Currently working in the trade or enrolled in a recognized apprenticeship program
  • Must possess a valid Class - G Ontario Driver's license
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints and schematic
  • Computer literacy, e.g. use of control systems, University computer system, e:mail etc.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with a minimum of supervision. Shares information with team members. Is collaborative in dealing with customers and fellow employees.

Compensation:

Rate of Pay: $36.26 per hour

Hours of Work: This is a full-time, continuing position. The normal hours of work are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (including 1/2 hour unpaid lunch break), Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours will be required, including evening and/or weekend work due to work volume. When possible, the manager will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 40 hours are worked in a week.
