Our client is a longstanding nonprofit in Ottawa that is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to join their team. The Human Resources (HR) Generalist plays a critical role in supporting the agencya??s people operations and fostering a positive organizational culture. Reporting to the Executive Director, the HR Generalist provides comprehensive HR services across recruitment and onboarding, benefits administration, employee relations, performance management, training and development, compliance, policy implementation, and HR analytics. This role is instrumental in helping the agency create a supportive, inclusive, and thriving workplace where staff are empowered to focus on delivering high-quality care and education to children and families. The HR Generalist partners with leaders and employees to cultivate a culture that reflects the agencya??s mission, values, and commitment to excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Recruitment & Onboarding

  • Manage full-cycle recruitment for administrative, program, and leadership roles, including job postings, screening, interviews, and reference checks.
  • Facilitate engaging onboarding experiences to support new hire success and retention.
  • Develop recruitment strategies and leverage programs or grants to attract and retain top talent.
Employee Relations & Engagement
  • Advise managers and employees on HR policies, benefits, and workplace matters.
  • Support performance management processes and provide coaching tools as needed.
  • Promote a positive, employee-focused workplace through engagement and well-being initiatives.
Compensation, Benefits & HRIS Administration
  • Administer employee benefits programs and support enrollment and inquiries.
  • Ensure payroll accuracy and maintain accurate HRIS records (Ceridian Dayforce).
  • Participate in compensation reviews and benchmarking to support equitable pay practices.
Compliance & Policy Administration
  • Maintain compliance with employment legislation, licensing requirements, and nonprofit standards.
  • Update employee handbooks, policies, and procedures to reflect best practices.
  • Support workplace investigations, accommodations, and other compliance-related processes.
Training & Development
  • Coordinate staff training and professional development programs.
  • Maintain training records for compliance and support leadership development initiatives.
  • Facilitate ongoing learning to enhance staff skills and the quality of care provided.
Health & Safety
  • Contribute to safety programs and Health & Safety Committee activities.
  • Support return-to-work programs, modified duties, and workplace accommodations.
  • Promote a culture of safety and wellness throughout the organization.
Metrics, Reporting & HR Projects
  • Track and report on HR metrics, including recruitment, turnover, and training outcomes.
  • Prepare required reports, such as the quarterly Statistics Canada Mandatory Employment Survey.
  • Lead or support HR projects and initiatives as assigned.
The ideal candidate will hold a business degree or diploma, specializing in Human Resources or an equivalent field and have a minimum of three years of experience as an HR Generalist, with experience in a nonprofit environment considered an asset. They will possess a strong understanding of Ontario employment laws, labor standards, and HR best practices, including the Employment Standards Act (ESA) and the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Exceptional interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to handle confidential information with the utmost professionalism and integrity. The candidate should be proficient in HRIS platforms and Microsoft Office Suite. Professional certification such as CHRP (Ontario), CPHR, PHR, or SHRM-CP is preferred.
