JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our Electrical Computers and Control (ECCD) team in Pickering and Darlington in the role of Human Factors Engineer (Technical Engineer/Officer).

Reporting to the Manager of Process Control, Security & Human Factors Engineering (HFE), the position will provide Human Factors Engineering Services to OPG Nuclear Generating Stations, Nuclear Waste and Advanced Inspection and Maintenance teams. The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to Ontario Power Generation by coordinating and collaborating with both internal and external stakeholders and provide HFE services to a number of projects in order to achieve our goal of minimizing probability of human errors, and reducing consequences of human errors at Ontario Power Generation.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Design and implement changes to human machine interfaces of significant complexity using a range of recognised engineering methods and data, primarily in the cognitive domain.
  • Provide expertise and guidance on human machine interface analysis methods, design methods and equipment selection.
  • Prepare and conduct walk throughs, user groups, structured interviews, simulator exercises as necessary to collect data, verify and validate human machine interface designs.
  • Provide guidance on the resolution of human machine interface licensing issues.
  • Dissemination of relevant technical knowledge through development of internal standards and design guides.
  • Contribute to a number of projects at a given time, including providing HFE design, guidance and services, as well as providing oversight of HFE services provided by vendors.
  • Act as an HFE stakeholder in the Engineering Change Control (ECC) process for modifications and work collaboratively with Projects and other stakeholder departments and vendors when required.
  • Meet with and correspond with Nuclear regulatory agencies.
  • Preparation of Human Factors Engineering Program Plans
  • Conduct and document function and task analysis
  • Conduct and document user trials
  • Conduct and document HFE verification activities
  • Conduct and document HFE validation activities
  • Preparation of Human Factors Engineering Summary Reports
  • Maintenance of the OPG HFE program documents and design guides
  • Preparation of estimates to complete various HFE activities.
  • Initiate, prepare, and issue all required design documentation;
  • Support engineering acceptance of modification turnovers;
  • Provide Engineering Change Control guidance, provide active support to field issues and Field Initiated Changes, and facilitate a positive outcome with EPC vendors;
  • Understand impacts on cost and schedule, and provide support to minimize impacts driving projects;
  • Gather input from stakeholder departments and agencies to ensure project requirements are captured and detailed in the project documents.
  • Maintain process compliance during project execution.
EDUCATION
  • Bachelor\'s degree in engineering or applied science, with preference for focus on Human Factors Engineering, Engineering Psychology, or related applied science
  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario (P.Eng, Limited Engineering License).
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of human perceptual, cognitive and physical characteristics as they apply to human performance in an industrial setting. This includes but is not limited to display design, annunciation, workplace layout, panel design, training and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to selectively apply human factors design tools (e.g. system analysis, task analysis, network analysis) to specific goals within the design process.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry a human machine interface design from concept through to implementation. This includes the ability to interpret engineering drawings, complex control logic and procedures.
  • Good general understanding of nuclear power plant design and operation including instrumentation, monitoring, diagnostic and control systems.
  • Good understanding of applicable codes, standards and regulatory requirements applicable to I&C in the nuclear environment.
  • Ability to work as part of a team or independently on multiple simultaneous projects.
  • 4 years of cumulative experience related to the human factors\' aspects of workplace design. Qualifying experience should include at least two of the following activities: design, development, and test and evaluation.
  • Candidates should possess both Human factors experience and educational performance
  • Experience and ability as a team player to understand and manage the interrelationships of various internal and external groups in order to facilitate objectives and ensure projects satisfy stakeholder requirements;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and must be comfortable leading meetings and giving presentations;
  • Have a strong interest in fast-paced, challenging work environment where showing initiative and self motivation are assets;
  • Proven track record on delivering results;
  • Strong in understanding, executing and following governance and procedures with a questioning and analytical attitude/approach under minimum required supervision;
  • Candidate must be a fully licensed engineer in the province of Ontario, or be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario.
