Job Description


The Health, Safety & Environment Advisor supports and facilitates health, safety and environmental activities on projects & job sites within the Atlantic Region (Newfoundland and Labrador), based out of St. John\'s, and will report to the Regional HSE Manager (Atlantic Region). This position has general accountability for providing day-to-day guidance to Operations Managers, Supervisors and Employees. The HSE Advisor will work closely with operations to ensure that the company\'s Health and Safety program is successfully delivered and implemented in all field operations. They will ensure proper application and use of Black & McDonald\'s Safety Management System.

We are seeking qualified candidates with a background in Occupational Health and Safety who are looking for a challenging and rewarding position within our organization. The chosen candidate must have excellent communication, client relation and computer skills with the willingness to learn within the fast-paced environments of the construction, service, and industrial industries. This position will demonstrate leadership in order to drive safety as a core value. The position will start immediately.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensures the Corporate Health and Safety Management Program is fully implemented, maximized and continuously improved within area operations.
  • Supports Managers, Supervisors and employees through coaching, mentoring and guidance of all aspects of the corporate health and safety management program.
  • Aids in the development and delivery of health and safety initiatives and measures the effectiveness of health and safety initiatives that influence performance and meet corporate expectations.
  • Completes compliance monitoring and verification activity within the operating area to ensure consistency with corporate standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Completes various health and safety inspections and audit programs.
  • Assist with project and job site activities and ensure that the duties, responsibilities, and authority are clearly defined.
  • Advise on hazard identification and control, inspections, investigations, reports, orientations, training requirements, project safety plans, and early and safe return to work programs.
  • Review/perform/complete incident and inspection reports and ensure that corrective action and follow-up are taken.
  • Develop and maintain safe work practices and job procedures.
  • Ensure that appropriate practices and procedures are provided and implemented.
  • Conduct random worksite inspections and audits to ensure compliance with company policies and legislation.
  • Review the maintenance of safety equipment.
  • Assess safety performance and safety management systems of subcontractors and assist with subcontractor management.
  • Participate in Project JHSC, Weekly Safety Meetings, Quarterly Meetings and Project Management meetings.
  • Communicate and hold working relations with HSE-related government agencies as required (i.e. WCB, Labour, etc.)

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor\'s degree or college diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental Studies or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of experience within the HSE-related field
  • CHSO, NCSO, CRSP, CRST, CHSC, designations would be a great asset but are not required.
  • Training in Working at Heights, First-Aid/CPR, Confined Space, Electrical Awareness, and Asbestos Awareness are assets.
  • Working knowledge of provincial, and federal HSE regulations, programs, and standards
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, HSE Programs (eCompliance) and other HSE databases (ISNetworld, Cognibox)
  • Languages: English
TRAVEL
  • Valid driver\'s license, with availability to vehicle
  • Is required to travel across Newfoundland and Labrador as required
  • Ability to travel up to 40% of the time (site locations, etc.)
