Job Summary
The Housing Maintenance Assistant supports the Housing Manager and works under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor and Housing Manager to help maintain the safety, functionality, and appearance of Band-Owned Rental housing units and related infrastructure. Responsibilities include completing routine maintenance tasks, responding promptly to work orders, and assisting with repairs. This position requires adherence to all safety procedures and active participation in training programs. The Housing Maintenance Assistant plays a key role in ensuring housing facilities are consistently well-maintained and meet community standards.
Responsibilities and Duties
Perform basic maintenance tasks, including painting, minor plumbing, and carpentry.
Assist in repairs and approved renovations on band-owned rentals.
Conduct routine property inspections on Band-Owned Rentals and document maintenance issues.
Respond to tenants' maintenance requests in a timely and courteous manner.
Support trades staff with complex repairs and renovations.
Clean and maintain job sites to ensure safety and organization.
Submit purchase order requests for supplies and materials.
Ensure all repairs comply with provincial and federal building codes.
Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition and track inventory.
Prepare vacant units for move-in, including attending inspections and walkthroughs.
Maintain accurate work records, including job documentation and site logs.
Participate in tenant education, including move-in orientation and maintenance workshops.
Attend and engage in training and upskilling opportunities.
Other duties as assigned by the Housing Manager or Maintenance Supervisor.
Preferred Qualifications
Grade 12 graduation or additional relevant skills or experience.
Understanding of work safety.
Ability to keep clear and concise records.
Proven construction background, with understanding of building codes.
Excellent interpersonal skills and working with clients.
Must have a proven ability to self-direct and manage time and tasks.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Possess a valid BC Class 5 driver's license would be an asset.
Working Conditions
Physically capable of lifting heavy objects.
Standing or walking for extended periods of time.
Able and willing to work outdoors in all-weather conditions.
Hours of Work
Regular office hours are from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm for 7 hours per day from Monday to Friday, up to 35 hours per week, and it is expected that all work will be completed within your regular working hours, however, you may be required from time to time to work outside your normal hours of work.
