As a vital part of our mission, we are seeking a Housing Focused Shelter Navigator Team Lead to oversee and lead the Housing Focused Shelter Navigator Program. Reporting directly to the Shelter Manager, this pivotal role is designed to foster a highly relational environment across all shelter programs, aiming to influence positive change in the lives of our shelter guests and ensure the highest standards of service provision.

In your role, you will work closely under the day-to-day guidance of the Shelter Manager, engaging intentionally with shelter users and other vulnerable populations to facilitate their orderly and timely transition out of the shelter environment. You will be at the forefront of working with our most vulnerable and/or chronic guests, providing them with the necessary housing supports by connecting them with both internal and external resources. This effort is aimed at diverting guests from the shelter as soon as possible and ensuring they are sustainably housed.

Your responsibilities will encompass crisis intervention, fostering meaningful conversations, case management, and conflict resolution on a daily basis. Position Type: Full-Time, 1-year fixed-term contract with the opportunity to extend
Schedule: Monday to Friday, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Reporting to: Shelter Manager
Location: Central and Strathcona Shelters, Edmonton, AB

  • Provide ongoing support and mentorship to Housing Focused Shelter Navigators, enhancing their skills and knowledge in delivering person-centered services and effectively assisting guests in their journey towards sustainable housing solutions.
  • Encourage community participants to seek and utilize resources and services that support their goals through a person-centered approach.
  • Employ case management tools effectively to assist shelter participants in setting and achieving both short-term and long-term goals related to housing, ensuring a structured and supportive path towards stable living conditions.
  • Meet with vulnerable, elderly, or handicapped guests to assess their needs and assist in moving them into more appropriate accommodation swiftly.
  • Identify chronic shelter users for assessment and necessary support, ensuring a structured NSQ process is followed.
  • Work closely with appropriate agencies to coordinate orderly move-outs, facilitating a smooth transition for shelter guests.
  • Provide referrals and assist with applications to outside agencies and internal programs to support housing stability for guests.
  • Assist in the preparation of administrative tasks necessary for securing housing, including connection to income, identification, and housing needs assessment.
  • Support the execution of securing housing, including housing search, apartment viewing, landlord engagement, and move-in processes.
  • Respond quickly to individuals in crisis, utilize de-escalation skills, and facilitate reconciliatory conversations to ensure a supportive community environment.
  • Diligently collect data and submit detailed reports both monthly and quarterly on program outcomes and progress towards housing goals, ensuring compliance with grant requirements and facilitating the continuous improvement of the housing program.
  • Ensure all activities and support services meet the requirements outlined in the Housing Focused Shelter Navigators Grant, aligning program objectives with grant expectations for accountability and success.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
  • At least 2 years of experience working with marginalized populations, including those within the culture of the inner city and/or less fortunate communities.
  • Knowledge and experience in addressing mental health issues and addictions.
  • Experience in case management, advocacy, and working in a volunteer-based organization is valued.
  • A demonstrated passion for being involved in ending homelessness in Alberta.
  • Strong leadership, people, and communication skills, capable of providing both positive and critical feedback.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships and work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • A high degree of professionalism and the ability to follow organizational protocols of front-line programs to completion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to use required software including word processing, spreadsheets, email communications, HMIS database system, Microsoft Outlook, and PowerPoint presentations.
  • Ability to work both independently and under guidance of the Shelter Manager, adapting to a fast-paced environment with moderate mental effort required for analyzing information and problem-solving.
  • Effective problem-solving skills with the capability to multitask and demonstrate strong organizational skills amidst shifting priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, along with effective conflict resolution abilities.
  • Must be a self-starter capable of working independently as well as under the guidance of the Housing Focused Shelter Navigator Team Lead.
  • A desire to serve within a Christian ministry context.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • The role involves moderate physical activities including walking, climbing, standing, sitting, as well as lifting and carrying items. Daily tasks will require active engagement in various settings both inside and outside the shelter environment.
  • The nature of this position is often fast-paced, necessitating a moderate level of mental effort to effectively analyze information and problem-solve. The candidate must be adept at managing a variety of tasks and challenges with efficiency and composure.
  • This role demands varied mental and emotional effort, as the Navigator will frequently encounter intense situations. The ability to provide conflict resolution, maintain professionalism, and offer direct support to clients at risk is crucial.
  • Successful candidates will receive training in essential operational tools and safety protocols, including the use of a two-way radio communication system and MS Office-based computer applications. Familiarity with the HMIS database system, FDARP (client record management), FOIP, as well as certifications in First Aid, NVCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention), and SafeTALK are required to effectively perform in this role.

  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Abstract, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Employment Security Check is required.
  • Participate in all staff training (e.g. First Aid, SafeTALK, Nonviolence Crisis Intervention, Naloxone Training)
