Niakwa Country Club is a private 18-hole Country Club located in Winnipeg. Niakwa prides itself on providing a premiere member and guest experience. Niakwa was founded in 1923 and celebrated its centennial year in 2023. Niakwa has a rich history of providing exceptional service for its members and guests and has hosted many national and provincial tournaments over the years. 2026 will be an exciting year at Niakwa as we are set to host the Canadian Senior Championship in September and add to the list of previously hosted championships. Niakwa provides exceptional golf, dinning, fitness facilities and a year round golf studio as member offerings.
Overview
The horticulturist will work under the supervision of the golf course Superintendent and alongside the course Assistant Superintendents. The successful candidate will be in charge of managing, designing and installing ornamental landscaping for the golf course and clubhouse properties. This includes plant selection, design and maintenance of all annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. The successful candidate will manage an annual budget and ensure that all features including the wedding area, patios and clubhouse present well at all times. We are seeking an energetic and motivated individual to compliment the management team and assist in obtaining premiere conditions across the entire Niakwa property. We are searching for a team member with a long term vision and desire to make Niakwa Country Club the best private club experience in Manitoba. Niakwa is an Audubon Certified Golf Course. The new horticulturalist will play a significant role in leading this program as we work towards recertification.
Work Term
Our goal is to find the ideal candidate who will take the horticulture programs to the next level. This position comes with year round employment on a salary basis. The ideal candidate will be someone who is looking for long term employment within the business of golf/ horticulture.
Functions
Manage the annual horticulture budget. Annually approximately $9000 in annual plantings
Manages ornamental landscaping throughout property
Selects and grows plant materials around the golf course
Trims and prunes hedges and shrubbery
Use and maintains low-pressure irrigation systems for landscaping
Apply fertilizers to ornamental plantings
All aesthetics associated around the club house and on course flower beds
Lead Audubon programs and activities including bee keeping (education to be provided)
Participation in golf course maintenance activities when required
Employment standards
Knowledge of the characteristics, growth habits and proper cultivation of a wide selection of flowering bulbs, annuals, biennials and perennial plant materials, including both herbaceous and woody plants
Knowledge of the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers, soil conditioners and pest control methods and materials
Education or related work experience in horticulture would be considered an asset
Must be willing to work every some weekends in season and overtime when required. Flexibility and the ability to react to Mother Nature is important
Participation with golf course related activities and knowledge of the game of golf would be considered an asset
Compensation:
Year round salary which will reflect the successful candidate's experience.
2 weeks paid vacation time with additional time in lieu throughout the winter
