About Us

The Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage is responsible for the promotion, development, preservation and celebration of Nova Scotia\xe2\x80\x99s culture, heritage, identity and languages. The Special Places Program is responsible for the preservation, regulation, and study of archaeological, historical and paleontological sites and remains deemed to be important parts of our natural and cultural heritage.

About Our Opportunity

The Special Places Assistant works closely with the Coordinator, Special Places to support the Special Place Program.

The Special Places Program is responsible for the preservation, regulation, and study of archaeological, historical, and paleontological sites and remains deemed to be important parts of our natural and cultural heritage. This work supports the protection and regulatory management of archaeological and historical sites, paleontological sites, and cemeteries, as well as land and marine areas of general heritage interest.

This position reports to the Coordinator, Special Places.

Primary Accountabilities

The Special Places Assistant responsibilities include:

  • The assistant will complete the filing and disposition of administrative and operational records generated through the
  • Special Places program.
  • Administers, coordinates, and participates in the evaluation of Environmental Assessments and Screenings processes, including
  • compiling and assimilating curatorial comments into a coordinated departmental response.
  • Provide research, communication, and outreach support in all areas of the Special Places program.
  • Works with Curatorial staff at the Nova Scotia Museum (archaeologists, biologists, botanists, and paleontologists) of the Collections Unit in support of the Special Places Program.
Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity for you if you have completed a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree, along with at least 2 years of related experience; an equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.

As the ideal candidate you have previous experience providing support in an environment that requires processing of time sensitive information on a regular and timely basis.

You are a collaborator with strong people skills, as well as sensitive to the needs of clients and demonstrate tact, sound judgement, initiative, creativity, and exercising discretion and confidentiality. You thrive in a challenging environment and possess exceptional communication and time management skills and can manage and prioritize complex and competing deliverables while ensuring accuracy.

Exceptional MS Office Suite skills are required (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions
  • Work is completed primarily in an office environment and on the Archives\xe2\x80\x99 public Reference Floor.
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Occasional lifting and use of ladders is required for accessing materials in archival storage areas.
Additional Information

This is a Term employment opportunity with an anticipated end date of March 7, 2025. The appointment status (\xe2\x80\x98term\xe2\x80\x99, \xe2\x80\x98temporary\xe2\x80\x99 or \xe2\x80\x98casual\xe2\x80\x99) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade: PR 10

Salary Range: $2,251.48 - $2,746.69 Bi-Weekly
