About Our Opportunity



As the Archival Assistant with Nova Scotia Archives, you will provide professional assistance in the development and delivery of core archival functions, services and projects. Following established archival procedures, standards, and best practices, you will undertake front-line assistance to researchers, facilitate retrieval and re-shelving of holdings, accession and maintain physical control of government and private-sector archival records, and implement final disposition of government records. You will also assist in the arrangement, description and preventive conservation of archival records by reviewing, organizing and appropriately rehousing unprocessed material, preparing file lists for data entry, recording key preservation assessment information, and updating institutional databases as required.
This position works under the supervision of the Manager, Nova Scotia Archives.

Primary Accountabilities


As part of the Public Services team you will provide frontline assistance to researchers both onsite and online.
  • The Archival Assistant provides professional assistance in the development and delivery of core archival functions including public services.
  • Your work will contribute to the preservation and accessibility of the holdings, and project work in collaboration with other members of our staff.


Qualifications and Experience



Successful completion of a Bachelor\'s Degree, plus 1 year of experience working in an archival or information management environment. Formal training in archival theory and practice and knowledge of Nova Scotia history, would be considered an asset.
The successful candidate will have sound knowledge of archival arrangement and preservation. The incumbent must have excellent organizational skills, internet skills, computer skills (specifically Microsoft Access and Excel), as well as communication skills (verbal and written). The successful candidate must have the ability to work well with others in a team environment, and knowledge of care and-handling best practices for archival materials. The incumbent must be able to lift up to 17 kg (35 lbs).
Proficiency in spoken French would be considered an asset.
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions



  • Work is completed primarily in an office environment and on the Archives\xe2\x80\x99 public Reference Floor.
  • Some evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Occasional lifting and use of ladders is required for accessing materials in archival storage areas.

Pay Grade: PR 06 Salary Range: $1,859.58 - $2,280.31 Bi-Weekly
