Duties

You\xe2\x80\x99ll be working for Wood Buffalo National Park, which is the largest national park in Canada, the world\xe2\x80\x99s largest dark-sky preserve, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is a cultural landscape for Cree, Dene, and M\xc3\xa9tis peoples of the region. The park works with eleven Indigenous communities, who continue to use the land for activities like hunting, trapping, fishing, and medicinal plant and berry picking. The 260 kilometers of gravel roads and 115 kilometers of chip sealed highway in the park provide access to these traditional activities and form an important part of this cultural landscape. Most of these roads are the sole access routes to communities inside and around the park, the largest being Fort Smith, a community of 2,500 people.

Starting in September 2024, the operation and maintenance of these roads will be executed by a third-party contractor. This new position will help shape the execution of this contract and develop the systems and processes that will ensure success for all parties. The Wood Buffalo Highway Operations Coordinator will be responsible for review and approval of the road management plans, monitoring the execution of contract work, financial management of the contract, and supporting the continuous improvement of the contract execution. This position will also support the capital work program for the road network in Wood Buffalo, as well as the annual construction of the Winter Road to the community of Fort Chipewyan, AB. Projects in the field unit\xe2\x80\x99s other 3 national park reserves (Nahanni, Thaidene Nene, and Naats\xe2\x80\x99ihch\xe2\x80\x99oh) may also be part of the role for motivated and successful incumbents.

Work environment

This is a place of opportunity \xe2\x80\x93 to learn new skills, to try things you\xe2\x80\x99ve maybe never done before, and to experience surreal landscapes.

You\xe2\x80\x99ll be based in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, a welcoming community of 2,500 people. Fort Smith is in Treaty 8 territory and the traditional territory of the Indigenous peoples of Salt River First Nation, Smith\'s Landing First Nation, and the Northwest Territory M\xc3\xa9tis Nation. It is a beautiful part of Canada with a plenty of cultural and outdoor activities to chose from. Along with good options for many of the common outdoor activities the region has world class white water paddling and birding opportunities.

Fort Smith is connected to southern Canada by a year-round paved highway (one you\xe2\x80\x99ll help to manage) and is nestled on the eastern Alberta-NWT border. Major cities like Edmonton are a 13-hour drive away, while Yellowknife is a seven-hour drive north. Flights are available into and out of the community via Fort Smith\xe2\x80\x99s local airline, Northwestern Air Lease.

The Fort Smith office is welcoming and supportive, staff work hard together and know how to have fun. We welcome you to be part of our fantastic team!
