High Density Library Assistant

.


Reporting to the HDL Manager, the HDL Assistant operates primarily out of the HDL, located at the University of Calgary' Spy Hill Campus. Working conditions frequently alternate between warehouse and office environments, with daily tasks ranging from handling heavy loads and operating powered equipment to answering emails and utilizing a variety of computer programs.


The ability to work in a climate-controlled environment for extended periods of time while either operating or being in proximity to heavy equipment is required. This position requires a tolerance to possible contaminant exposure, including book dust and mould. Work schedule is a 35-hour work week, Monday through Friday, with peak periods during the beginning and end of the Fall and Winter semesters.

Summary of Key Responsibilities

(job functions include but are not limited to):


Processing Room

Material processing: unpacks, sorts, and cleans incoming materials; assembles and labels trays; scans barcodes into inventory system. Computer usage:uses inventory software to create pick and refile orders; processes files generated by handheld scanners; communicates with university staff regarding work orders and projects. Fulfills digitization requests by using scanning software to digitize requested content.

Warehouse Duties

Operates warehouse equipment such as pallet jacks and power jacks, as well as order pickers at heights of up to 30 feet. Retrieves and refiles material as required for work orders and projects.

Delivery and Other

Drives the HDL cube van as part of the daily delivery. Performs other duties related to collections maintenance as required.

Qualifications / Requirements:



Completion of grade 12 (or equivalent). Relevant post-secondary education would be considered an asset. A valid Class 5 drivers license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required). Strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience using web browsers and Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook and Excel. Must be able to work collaboratively with a small team, while also demonstrating initiative when working alone. Demonstrates strong customer service and interpersonal skills when communicating with members of the university, as well as external vendors. Ability to routinely lift/slide loads of approximately 50 lbs. alone, and heavier loads with mechanical assistance. Capable of operating an order picker at heights of up to 30 feet. Physically capable of walking, standing, squatting, kneeling, and reaching for extended periods of time in a climate-controlled area. Tolerance to contaminants such as dust and mould; personal protective equipment will be provided as required. Successful completion of certification program for order picker and power jack would be an asset; training will be provided as required. Previous inventory management experience in a warehouse or distribution center environment would be an asset. Previous work experience in a library or post-secondary institution would be an asset.
