Help keep our City moving safely and reliably. With our fleet of over 4,700 vehicles, you’ll work on everything from turf equipment to track hoes. Apply your up-to-date diagnostic skills to figure out what’s wrong. Get your hands dirty to fix the problem. Use your computer abilities to record what you did.   • Troubleshoot, repair and overhaul engines, brakes, driveline components, hydraulic systems and electrical components
  • Estimate the resources and materials it’ll take to get the job done in a smart, cost-effective way
  • Complete preventive maintenance checks and diagnostic work on vehicles and equipment
  • Refer to and follow technical manuals, policies, safety requirements and industry standards
  • Record your work in our computerized fleet management system
  • Do paperwork for inspections, authorization forms and provincial certification forms - manually and on a computer
  • Learn and share what you know; mentor apprentices and semi-skilled helpers and participate in safety and environmental meetings and training programs
  • Perform other duties, as assigned

Qualifications :
  • Recognized Journeyman certification in the Trade of Heavy Equipment Technician (H.E.T.)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) with ability to obtain Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement; obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position; eligible to be licensed by the Province of Alberta to do Commercial Vehicle Inspections (CVIP). Class 1 license is an asset
  • Able to locate, diagnose and repair malfunctions in spark-ignition and diesel engines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and heavy-duty power trains
  • Capable of competently using vehicle diagnostic computer programs
  • Able to accurately enter data and information into a computer (AssetWorks M5 experience is an asset)
  • Committed to safety using occupational health and safety and environmental standards and procedures
  • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills Able to understand, communicate, read and write English at a level needed to meet job-related task and safety requirements
  • Demonstrated good work ethic and a willingness/ability to learn and mentor on the job and update skills
  • Capable of passing a job-related physical abilities evaluation (includes lifting 75 pounds) and a City medical examination
  • Must be able to wear a custom-fit respirator for extended periods of time. This requires a clean-shaven face at all times
  • Ability to perform field work and be on-call when needed
