Heavy Duty Mechanic - Permanent Full Time

The Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for the timely, accurate and cost-effective repair and preventative maintenance of various heavy equipment, fleet vehicles, and small equipment.

Hours of Work: The hours of work are 40 hours / week.

Salary: The salary range for this in-scope position is $38.35 - $43.16 per hour.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Position Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Perform diagnostic and testing procedures to verify problems and determine cause as submitted on work orders or by supervisor. Determine the condition and/or wear on parts for replacement. Recommend preventative maintenance.
  • Operate electronic, hydraulic and computerized testing and diagnostic equipment.
  • Repair and overhaul a wide variety of equipment, vehicles, tools, and other miscellaneous items including cars, pick-up trucks, tractors, trailers, graders, loaders, street sweepers, snow blowers, turf equipment, and other miscellaneous machinery and shop tools. Components include gasoline, natural gas, diesel engines, transmissions, steering assemblies, air and hydraulic suspension systems, brakes, pollution control systems, electronic and electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air conditioning and heating systems.
  • Estimate repair jobs to determine what the parts and labour will cost to complete repair. Determine total length of time necessary for the completion of the job. Compile this information and record it on work orders or an estimate sheet.
  • Ability to accurately complete a variety of records, safety inspection reports, and other documents which are required to ensure equipment is properly and cost-effectively repaired and maintained.
  • Complete work orders, giving detailed explanation of the work performed which may include a description of any unforeseen problem that occurred to prolong the job past the time allocated which it was estimated.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance, road tests, and other inspections on all types of equipment and vehicles, including Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) inspections and provide legal certification as to the road worthiness of air brake-equipped tandem trucks and trailers.
  • Ability to identify and complete Formal Hazard Assessments for safety sensitive and/or routine tasks.
  • Perform some routine welding and fabrication repairs which may require designing and fabricating a special tool or piece of equipment not normally available for a specific job requirement.
  • Perform all daily safety, maintenance checks, and conduct general care and maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintain a parts inventory, including identify, recommend, and pre-order necessary repair parts and materials.
  • Ensure adherence to all applicable Town of Blackfalds policies, procedures and bylaws.
  • Ensure compliance with OH&S including attendance at safety meetings, being properly trained in OH&S related topics, and ensuring work is completed in a safe manner.
  • Coordinate with external repair facilities as needed.
  • Liaise and communicate with co-workers, management, customers, and vendors sincerely, clearly, tactfully, promptly and courteously; respond to inquiries and complaints promptly and professionally.
  • Maintain a work area in clean and safe condition and perform other duties as required.
  • Seek technical advice from equipment dealers and parts distributors as required.
Requirements:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work safely at all times.
  • Self-starter with an ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment.
  • Ability to tolerate frequent interruptions, manage own workload, establish priorities.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (work order systems, outlook, word, excel).
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Alberta Journeyperson Certification as a Heavy Equipment Technician.
  • 5 years\' experience working as a heavy-duty mechanic/technician.
  • Additional courses in welding, metal stress and fatigue, air brakes, ABS brakes, hydraulics, computer components, electrical systems, and Government Vehicle Inspections.
  • Knowledgeable of OH&S requirements as they relate to job duties.
Additional Requirements:
  • RCMP Criminal Record Check.
  • Valid Class 3 Alberta Driver\'s License with Q endorsement, with current and acceptable Drivers Abstract.
  • Full set of mechanics tools.
Physical Demands
  • Working hours are 8 hours per day, five days per week; modified shifts, weekends and evenings may be required
  • Physical demands of this position: ability to walk, stand, crouch for long periods of time and carry out strenuous physical tasks over the period of a shift:
  • Be able to lift, push and pull at least 40lbs.
  • Manual dexterity in working with small parts and tools in restricted spaces.
  • Cognitive demands of this position: ability to gauge business levels and prioritize work accordingly, periods of concentration, high accountability for safety standards and performance.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.
Work Environment
  • The majority of work will be performed inside the Operations Center, but occasionally must be done at the worksite under less than ideal conditions.
