Valley Regional Hospital, which opened in 1992, serves the people of Kings and Annapolis Counties. It provides specialty services as a referral center for the Annapolis Valley and other areas of Western Nova Scotia.
The Healthcare Access Control Officer will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of patients, staff, and visitors by operating advanced AI-powered weapon detection systems at the entrances of larger and regional hospitals within NSHA. This position requires exceptional communication and customer service skills to provide a safe, welcoming environment while maintaining a strong security presence.
Key Responsibilities:
Operate and monitor AI-based weapon detection and access control systems at designated hospital entry points.
Engage with patients, visitors, and staff in a professional, courteous, and empathetic manner while conducting screening procedures.
Respond to system alerts, conduct secondary screening when necessary, and escalate incidents according to NSHA security protocols.
Provide clear directions, support, and reassurance to individuals passing through the access control process.
Maintain accurate records of incidents, security breaches, and equipment performance.
Collaborate with healthcare staff, security teams, and law enforcement partners as required.
Uphold infection control and hospital safety policies while ensuring smooth traffic flow through entry points.
Contribute to a culture of safety, respect, and inclusivity within the healthcare environment.
Prerequisites & Qualifications:
Valid Security License (as per Nova Scotia regulations).
Prior experience in healthcare security, law enforcement, or access control (preferred).
Strong verbal communication, conflict de-escalation, and customer service skills.
Ability to operate advanced security technology, including AI-based detection systems.
Standard First Aid & CPR certification (CSA Approved)
Ability to remain calm, professional, and empathetic under pressure.
Physically able to perform duties, including standing for extended periods and responding quickly to incidents.
Must be able to provide certifications in Use of Force (UOF) and Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB)
Applicants lacking these certifications can opt into Paladin's UoF/MOAB training program prior to their onboarding training to ensure they meet the requirements of the position
Please be aware: The UoF/MOAB training is not paid as it is a pre-requisite; however, Paladin will cover all of the costs of the training with a 6-month commitment to the position/availability
