The Continuing Care Safety Association is in the prevention business and acts as the primary resource in providing customized occupational health and safety education, training, and support to organizations within the continuing care, senior supportive living, healthcare, and community & social services sectors aimed at preventing staff illness and injury.

Purpose/Objective:



This position develops, implements, manages and promotes health, safety initiatives and training programs as part of the Continuing Care Safety Association (CCSA) team.

Job Summary:



The

Health and Safety Consultant

plays a crucial role as the main resource for providing customized occupational health and safety support to CCSA members. This position entails the application of safety principles to protect, promote, and maintain workplace health and safety, in accordance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulations and Code. The

Health and Safety Consultant

works in collaboration with the CCSA team, members, and various stakeholders to identify, create, implement, and evaluate safety initiatives, strategies, and educational services aimed at preventing workplace injuries. The

Health and Safety Consultant

offers guidance to CCSA members regarding the development, implementation, assessment, and enhancement of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. This role also contributes to CCSA's Certificate of Recognition Program through Audit Report Quality Assurance Reviews and performs COR Audits for CCSA COR Holders as needed. The

Health and Safety Consultant

closely collaborates with the Director of Training Delivery & Member Engagement, CCSA staff, member and associate member groups, as well as external partners, ensuring compliance with CCSA's policies, processes, work practices, and procedures.

Function:



Deliver consulting and educational services in a leading role to shape the creation, execution, and evaluation of health and safety management systems aimed at minimizing workplace injuries and illnesses. Collaborate with the team to implement prevention strategies while upholding the shared vision and values of the CCSA, in alignment with CCSA professional standards, legislation, and regulations.

Qualifications/Knowledge:



Post-Secondary Degree/Diploma, i.e. Bachelor of Education, Licensed Practical Nurse, Community & Social Services from a recognized and accredited program of study or equivalent; Occupational Health and Safety Management Diploma or Degree is preferred; Knowledge and/or working experience in the Continuing Care & Social Services Industries Minimum 5 years of adult learning, training and/or facilitating experience; Advanced knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Planner, Cloud-based Document Storage i.e. OneDrive, and Zoom Meetings or similar video conferencing solutions; Strong written and oral communication skills; Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license; Current driver's abstract that demonstrates a safe driving record; Complete and current Criminal Record Check.

Skills:



In-depth understanding of provincial legislation related to Occupational Health and Safety and associated regulations. Extensive knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Management System processes and procedures. Proven ability to effectively educate adults by applying adult learning principles and utilizing various media in diverse safety programs. Demonstrated capability to plan, design, develop, and deliver safety-related training programs. A high level of resourcefulness, with the ability to organize tasks efficiently, complete assignments accurately, and take initiative to work both independently and collaboratively. Skilled in building and maintaining strong working relationships and partnerships with stakeholders, both internal and external. Adaptable in approach, able to work effectively across a range of situations involving different CCSA members and stakeholders. Focused on client needs and dedicated to providing excellent service.

Physical Requirements:



Ability to meet the physical requirements including:

o Lifting to a maximum of 44 lbs

o Carrying/transporting objects up to a maximum 44 lbs (dependent on safe lifting factors)

o Bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, stretching

o Pushing and pulling

o Sitting and standing for prolonged periods

Professional Responsibility



Effectively and efficiently manage your time to fulfill CCSA's Strategic Plan and achieve performance excellence. This includes maintaining a healthy work/life balance, addressing member needs, organizing your calendar and schedule, providing follow-up, and responding to inquiries and requests for support. The assigned workload is managed independently, ensuring efficient time utilization to meet deadlines and timeframes effectively.

Member Engagement



Lead and/or assist delivery of CCSA training programs via classroom-based whether on or off-site, or via alternate delivery channels including online instruction as required. Travel within the Province of Alberta (including overnight stay) primarily by motor vehicle to employers' work sites and other meeting places throughout the province, Identify and respond to CCSA member's training needs related to prevention and safe work practices for all activities in the workplace. Develops, implements, and evaluates training manuals, programs, tools, resources, activities, and assessments Ensure effective follow-up and support for participants and/or employers to help them apply their knowledge in practice. This can be achieved through various channels, including on-site visits, phone calls, emails, or written communication.

Technology & Research



Develop and support technology-enabled training and other initiatives, Creates, implements and evaluates guidelines for CCSA resources to ensure the sustainability and quality assurance of all CCSA resource material. Maintains awareness of Provincial safety initiatives, current trends and new information on Injury Prevention and Safety Management Systems tools and techniques. Has attained and maintains comprehensive knowledge of current applicable legislation such as: Alberta Occupation Health and Safety Act, Regulations and Code and other related legislation and CCSA policies and procedures, Conducts research using valid research methodologies to determine leading safety practices and procedures while designing solutions to member issues,

Teamwork



Support and contribute to activities related to CCSA's administration and coordination of the Certificate of Recognition program, including quality assurance reviews of COR audits, Ensures the proper recording and retention of all necessary safety training records and reports. This includes, but is not limited to, participant training records, identifying trends and preparing various reports based on data and observations or communications. Engage in outreach initiatives and provide services at conferences, trade shows, public relations events, and more. Engage in and actively participate in staff meetings as needed and attend in-service sessions to enhance your knowledge and skills. Provide administrative support as required. Complete other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety Responsibilities:



Comply with CCSA Health and Safety policies and procedures, safe work practices and requirements of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Legislation. Take reasonable care to work safely and carry out duties as to not cause injury to themselves, fellow employees or the general public. Immediately report all occupational injuries and illnesses, near misses or potential hazards to direct supervisor or alternate as appropriate. Aware of emergency response responsibilities and respond appropriately for role. Ensure all personal protective equipment (PPE) is being used properly; maintained and report defective or missing PPE to direct supervisor or alternate as appropriate. Meets infection prevention and control requirements by adhering to infection control guidelines and practices and procedures and additional precautions when required. Handle and dispose of hazardous materials according to WHMIS and organizational policies and guidelines. Seek, offer and accept assistance when required. Use equipment and supplies according to established standards and procedures. Refrain from or participating in workplace harassment and/or violence Maintain and promote a safe working environment at all times.

Occupational Job Hazards

:

Transporting of carts and dollies can cause overexertion and exposure to pinch points which may result in strains, sprains or falls, and fingers or crushed limbs or hand. Obstructions in walkways, including cables, boxes, crates, bins, equipment can result in trips. Working with employees, members/non-members and in common areas and classroom areas may result in exposure to bacteria, fungi, viruses, and bodily fluid increasing the risk of acquiring illness and/or infection. Exposure to chemicals that could result in skin reactions or respiratory illness. Exposure to Electrical equipment, cords and outlets in common areas and office space may increase risk of exposure to burns and electrical shock. Sitting for prolonged periods of time, repetitive manual tasks, bending and reaching can increase forces on muscles and tendons contributing to fatigue or musculoskeletal strain.
