About the Health Career Access Program



As a Health Care Support Worker (HCSW), you will alternate between job experience and completing the Health Care Assistant program at a recognized post-secondary institution. For the job experience portion, you will work fulltime as a HCSW at one of our Care Homes and be paid $24.80/hour. For the education portion, you will be provided leave and paid a stipend of $930/week while attending the Health Care Assistant program. Tuition and all costs associated with your training are paid through the program.

About the Health Care Support Worker Role



Health Care Support Workers are supervised by Registered Nurses or other regulated health care professionals. They provide a variety of critical non-clinical, non-direct care supports for our residents. Duties include:

Participating as an integral member of a healthcare delivery team

Establishing a caring relationship with residents and families

Providing support and assistance with mealtime and other activities

Performing housekeeping duties

Greeting and directing visitors

Restocking supplies

Completing and maintaining relevant records

Stage 1: Start as a Health Care Support Worker at Broadmead Care



Qualifications:



To participate in HCAP you must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Education and Skills



Grade 10, including the successful completion of English 10, or equivalency

Food Safe level 1 (or willing to obtain before the start date)

Standard First Aid with CPR (or willing to obtain before the start date)

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Ability to establish and maintain relationships with clients, residents and coworkers

Ability to work independently and in cooperation with others

Ability to operate related equipment

Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position

Able to work in shifts rotations (4 days on, 2 days off); either days OR nights

Successful applicants will also be required to:

Provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19

Provide evidence of a clear TB test and record of vaccinations

Undergo a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check

Stage 2: Complete basic training and onboarding



All new Health Care Support Workers must complete a paid training and onboarding program provided by Broadmead Care. Upon completion of your basic training you will be paired with a mentor and begin working as a Health Care Support Worker.

Stage 3: Become a Health Care Assistant



After you complete basic training and a work period, you will enter a structured education program to become a Health Care Assistant. The program is delivered as a partnership between Broadmead Care, Sprott Shaw College, and Camosun College. Tuition for the Health Care Assistant program is paid by HCAP. The entire HCAP will take about a year complete. Following successful completion of HCAP, you must register with the BC Care Aide and Community Health Care Worker Registry and complete to Broadmead Care.
