JOB SUMMARY



The purpose of the instructor is to lead and contribute to the academic success of students and to the success of the College in achieving its statement of purpose. Under general direction, the instructor is responsible for providing quality instruction and facilitating student learning according to the prescribed curriculum.

JOB PROFILE



Specifically, the Instructor will be responsible for:

Delivering in-person and combined delivery program instruction that meets module and program objectives as set out in the Provincial HCA Curriculum (2023) Evaluating student performance fairly and consistently in-class, in-lab and in practice education Contributing to the development of curriculum and instructional materials Supporting the administrative functions of the campus to enhance the student experience Acting in a manner that upholds the College standards Participating in College and Program Activities Monitoring and reviewing students during practicum and/or clinical placements, as program requires

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES



The instructor will at various times be responsible for the following as well as other related duties as assigned to support the business objectives and purpose of the College.

1. Delivering instruction that meets module and program objectives as set out in the curriculum through:

Explaining the course outline, syllabus and expectations to students, and following meaningful learning objectives. Preparing lesson plans and teaching aids that utilize a variety of teaching methods which will promote the attainment of desirable goals of students. Encouraging participation and the development of critical thinking and communication skills through appropriate assignments and in-class exercises. Arranging make-up sessions for teaching hours lost through student illness and other unavoidable student absences. Informing the Program Coordinator of any significant changes or problems that arise during a module. Observing scheduled class times and maintaining an appropriate learning environment. Familiarize self with course material and evaluation methods Engage students in various learning opportunities through in-class delivery with the learning management platform while meeting various learning needs and styles Gain an understanding and confidence using the learning management system for in-person delivery.
2. Evaluating student performance fairly and consistently, through activities such as:

Developing and explaining methods that accurately measure student progress toward course objectives. Discussing students' progress individually or in a group as appropriate. Creating and administering assignments and examinations to assess and evaluate student learning. Marking and providing meaningful and timely feedback on assignments and examinations. Maintaining accurate and current records of student progress and submitting final grades according to established guidelines. Demonstrating sensitivity to student needs and circumstances.
3. Contributing to the development of curriculum and instructional materials by:

Material must be kept consistent with the latest edition of the textbook. Participating in the development and evaluation of curriculum and instructional materials, as required. Seeking approval for major curriculum revisions from the Health Sciences Program Coordinator.
4. Supporting the administrative functions of the campus to enhance the student experience by:

Carrying out administrative tasks such as photocopying and preparing handouts for students. Cooperating with the administration staff and other instructors in the performance of their duties. Completing required forms and records and submitting them to administration staff in a timely manner. Taking and submitting attendance records for each student in the Course throughout the terms. Participating in teaching evaluations and performance reviews.
5. Acting in a manner that upholds the College standards through actions such as:

Always conducting themselves with the utmost attention to professionalism, integrity and respect for students, the program, colleagues, curriculum and the College as is fitting of a person in a position of trust with respect to the students. Possessing a clear understanding of, and upholding, all of the policies and procedures, as reasonably adopted and amended from time to time by the College. Reporting scholastic dishonesty to the Campus Director and helping to determine the appropriate course of action to be taken. Demonstrating strong interpersonal skills in interactions with all college staff and students.
6. Participating in College and Program Activities

Attending campus functions such as Orientation Day, Graduation and Instructors' meetings. Participating in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the college. Substituting for other instructors within the same program in case of absences.
7. Monitoring and reviewing students during practicum and/or clinical placements when necessary through activities such as:

Delivering practical instruction and supervision that helps learners meets practicum objectives as set out in the curriculum. Monitoring learners' progress and supporting their practical learning throughout placement. Communicating with host organization to ensure students are meeting expectations and address any evolving issues.

Combined/Online - Synchronous Delivery Responsibilities:



Deliver course content through synchronous online methods, ensuring alignment with course objectives and curriculum standards. Foster a positive and interactive online learning environment, encouraging student participation and collaboration. Provide timely feedback, support, and guidance to students, helping them achieve academic success. Utilize various online tools and technologies to enhance learning, including Learning Management Systems (LMS) and video conferencing platforms. Monitor student progress and engagement, adjusting instructional methods as needed to meet diverse learning needs. Maintain clear and consistent communication with students, addressing questions and concerns promptly.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS



To be successful in the instructor position, individuals must be committed to developing, maintaining and demonstrating the following:

Theory Courses, Lab and Practice Education Instruction:



1. Current unrestricted (i.e., no conditions on license or provisional registration) full registration as a licensed practical nurse, registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM); and

2. Demonstrated ability to teach adult learners (e.g., completion of Provincial Instructor Diploma

or

equivalent education

or

previous teaching experience with satisfactory references

or

positive performance evaluations and student course evaluations); and

3. Two or more years of full-time Canadian nursing experience (1 year = 1400 hours) with relevant knowledge of the Canadian health care system, the roles and responsibilities of healthcare team members and current policies and procedures within residential and community care settings. Nursing work experience to include:

Experience in working with older adults with complex health needs; and Experience or orientation (e.g., shadow shifts) in home support and multi-level/complex care.
4. Evidence of completion of course work in Indigenous cultural safety and humility (e.g., San'yas Anti-Racism Indigenous Cultural Safety Training or an alternative training program); and or equivalent

5. Evidence of completion of the Health Care Assistant Practice in BC course available on the LearningHub as part of their orientation/on-boarding. This will support a current understanding of the role of the HCA within BC.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $42.00-$50.00 per hour

Work Location: Hybrid remote in Surrey, BC V3W 1R1
