Job Description

Description: The Health Care Aide (HCA) provides basic nursing care to patients/residents as directed, assists with activities of daily living, and performs other activities necessary to meet the personal needs of patients/residents. The HCA maintains and promotes patient/resident safety, comfort, privacy, dignity and independence, and performs duties to maintain an aesthetic environment. The HCA is responsible for the provision of care in accordance with established standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies and procedures of Covenant Health. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the AUPE Auxiliary Nursing Collective Agreement.

Required Qualifications:

Required Qualifications: Active status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed: 1) a continuing care or medicine unit placement, and 2) either Year 1 of a practical nursing program; or Year 2 of a baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program, and 3) knowledge and experience with medication assistance; will be considered. Candidates who are In Progress on the Directory may be considered. Candidates will be required to provide proof of Active enrolment on the Directory. Physically able to assist with all aspects of patient/resident care and transport, e.g. walking, standing, bending and lifting. Must be able to understand written and verbal directions in English.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Applicants must be legally eligible to work in Canada. Must have completed a minimum of Grade 11, transcripts required. In addition, they must meet the admission requirements for the Health Care Aide Program at Norquest College. For English Language Arts, this requirement can be satisfied with a minimum grade of 60% in English Language Arts 20-2, 55% in English Language Arts 30-2, or successful completion of the Accuplacer exam, or an equivalent. If English is a second language, applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency. Test results must be no more than two years old at the start of the program. Acceptable scores include an IELTS Academic score of 6.0 with no section below 5.5, a TOEFL iBT score of 71, a Duolingo score of at least 95, or a CLBA/CLBPA score with no section below 7. Applicants must also be physically capable of supporting all aspects of patient or resident care and transport, including walking, standing, bending, and lifting, and must be able to understand both written and verbal directions in English. Preferred Qualifications:

This is a training opportunity for individuals who are not already certified or eligible to be certified as Health Care Aides. Applicants must NOT already have HCA certification, related education, or experience in the role.
