Safety
We take the safety of our employees and others seriously. Desco is currently hiring for a health and safety advisor in a part time role. The successful candidate for the job will be able to work part time at home, our office, and various construction sites in and around Edmonton. Transportation may be limited at times, so applicants with vehicles are preferred.
Hours:
We expect this position to take 15-20 hours a week. Some periods, such as during COR audits, will require 35-40 hour commitments.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct site inspections at client sites.
Develop and implement health and safety programs, policies, and procedures in line with regulatory standards.
Provide expert advice and support to management teams on occupational health and safety matters.
Facilitate training sessions and workshops on safety practices, incident response, and regulatory compliance. You will be comfortable in completing WHMIS training and competency assessments for our employees.
Investigate incidents and near-misses, prepare detailed reports, and recommend corrective actions.
Stay up-to-date with local, provincial, and federal health and safety legislation and industry best practices.
Assist with the development of emergency preparedness plans and business continuity strategies.
Support Desco in obtaining and maintaining industry certifications (e.g., COR, Avetta, ISNet, Complyworks).
Conduct staff wide safety meetings (held at 7:30am) 6 times a year.
Chair Joint Health and Safety Committee Meetings (held at 3:00pm) 6 times a year.
Commit to a full-time role in completing the annual COR audit (in December, 1-2 weeks of full time).

Qualifications:
Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or related field.
Relevant certifications (e.g., CRSP, CHSC, NCSO, or equivalent) preferred.
Minimum 2 years of experience in a construction field position. Experience within concrete, coatings, painting, or similar field are preferred.
Strong knowledge of OHS legislation and industry standards.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Benefits
Flexible work position; part of the role can be completed remotely. However, you will need to visit project sites and conduct meetings at our office. You will be provided a company laptop for remote work.
