Polykar in Edmonton is hiring for a Head of Shipping
The Head of Shipping is responsible for leading and overseeing all shipping, receiving, and warehouse operations for the Edmonton plant and warehouse. They will report to the Director of Supply Chain and Logistics. As a hands-on leader, this role ensures that all finished goods and materials are handled efficiently, inventory is accurately managed, and transportation activities are optimized to reduce costs, waiting times, and late fees. The Head of Shipping will lead a team across the warehouse and plant floor, ensuring smooth coordination with Production, Customer Service, and Supply Chain to achieve company goals.
Roles and Responsibilities
Responsible for the day-to-day warehouse operations, including assisting with loading and unloading freight/shipments.
Manage the shipping and receiving team in both warehouse and plant environments. Ensuring coverage of manpower is optimized depending on workflow and schedule. Approve timesheets, manage overtime and resolve conflicts.
Provide clear leadership and supervision including coaching, training and performance management for all shipping and receiving staff creating an effective and efficient team. This includes employee performance management review and annual salary increase processes.
Utilize key performance indicators (KPIs) to continuously monitor warehouse performance, with a primary focus on cost controls, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
Manage all shipping and receiving documentation, including advanced shipping notices, pick slips, packing lists, bills of lading, and export documents.
Oversee the flow of goods from preparation to shipment while ensuring compliance with company standards and customer requirements.
Responsible for maintaining and managing accurate inventory records, conducting monthly and annual physical inventories, and ensuring reconciliation between system and physical counts. Annual physical inventory will be coordinated with the Directory of Supply Chain and Logistics.
Optimize transportation activities by coordinating carriers, scheduling shipments efficiently, and minimizing waiting times and late delivery fees.
Working with the warehouse team ensure the finished goods are packaged and prepared according to customer or vendor specifications.
Ensuring shipping-receiving team collaborates with the production team to stage materials to facilitate production requirements.
Managing production waste materials for disposal (pallets, gaylord boxes etc.)
Manage the shipping department budget, monitor costs, and identify process improvements to increase efficiency.
Resolve issues related to shipments, deliveries, or inventory discrepancies promptly.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized warehouse environment.
Collaborate closely with Production, Customer Service, and Supply Chain departments to ensure timely and accurate deliveries.
Generate regular reports on shipping, receiving, and inventory performance for management review.
Work with HSE in developing Safe Work Practices and Procedures.
Ensure compliance and enforcement of all safety standards to ensure a safe working environment. Must recognize unsafe conditions and behaviors and make appropriate corrections to prevent injury and loss.
Responsible for completing incidents reviews and ensuring follow ups for compliance.
Other duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
Completion of post secondary diploma, preferably in Supply Chain Management, with a minimum of 3-5 years supervisory experience in a warehouse distribution environment is required. A combination of experience and education may be considered.
Proven leadership experience managing a team of employees in a manufacturing or distribution environment.
Experience in a high volume, fast paced warehouse setting.
Solid knowledge of logistics procedures, documentation, and transportation coordination.
Computer literacy with MS Office and inventory management systems (ERP).
Forklift license and/or certification.
Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
High attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
Positive, hands-on, and proactive leadership style with a focus on continuous improvement.
Working in BRCGS environment is an asset.
Ability to lift up to 50lbs.
