The Head of Matchmove ensures that Rodeo FX remains on the cutting edge creatively and technologically within their specialty, ensuring consistency in the quality, techniques and processes across all of Rodeo\'s project teams within their speciality.

In conjunction with the Sr. Head of 3D, this person will develop a long-term vision for the Matchmove Specialty, driving various initiatives to ensure it is achieved. They oversee technology projects, changes to work methods, and lead training initiatives.

As the top expert in their specialty, all Matchmove Artists and Leads report directly to them.

Main responsibilities:

  • Participate in the kick-off of all projects, including project planning, defining methodology, any tool development required, and will advise on casting of tasks within their team. For their own projects, assign shots and sequences to artists in conjunction with production, taking into account their abilities and level. Resolve any visual or technical issues encountered by their projects and consult on other projects for their specialty ;
  • Direct the artists on the projects to which they are assigned and closely monitor the quality of work produced. Run dailies sessions, review shots and make sure work follows proper methodology and corresponds with client\'s vision ;
  • Participate or work on complex shots or sequences ;
  • Monitor upcoming milestones and keep the project team informed of the status of work, issues to be resolved, ramifications of problems encountered and potential solutions ;
  • Plan outsourcing needs and help communication with outsource vendors.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and seek the latest technological advances within their specialty ;
  • Set short and long-term objectives for their specialty, and, in conjunction with the Sr. Head of 3D, develop strategies to achieve them. Create a roadmap, communicate it to the team and ensure implementation ;
  • Review post-mortems of all projects to identify improvements needed in the toolset of the speciality and work to implement the changes across all project teams ;
  • Delegate, or manage development projects to ensure their delivery and implementation, and that changes are communicated in a clear and timely manner ;
  • Establish common standards of practice for the specialty and ensure they are applied across project teams ;
  • Identify global training needs for the specialty and, in conjunction with the Training Manager, develop and implement a training plan and calendar. Oversee the preparation and update of training materials and seminars ;
  • May participate in the pre-bidding process by advising on strategy and approaches for look development and early project planning ;
  • Lead recurrent department meetings to provide updates, stay informed of ongoing projects and encourage the sharing of knowledge and information within the specialty ;
  • Communicate staffing needs to the recruitment team, assist in screening candidates by reviewing CVs. Conduct interviews and approve hires ;
  • In consultation with Matchmove Leads, review the performance of Matchmove Artists and ensure that they receive feedback on a regular basis through the mid and post mortem process. Conduct annual performance reviews and make recommendations for salary reviews ;
  • In conjunction with Department Managers, responsible for the management of performance of Matchmove Artists including deciding on promotions (levels and/or positions), disciplinary or performance issues, and terminations ;
  • Ensure their team is staffed with the appropriate balance of skills and experience to meet the company\'s current and planned business needs ;
  • Actively monitor the work climate in their team, taking steps to encourage and ensure the maintenance of a positive work environment and adherence to company values ;
  • Positively represent Rodeo FX within the VFX and related communities to further grow the company\'s reputation as an industry leader. This can include giving conferences, participating in panels and actively participating in industry events.
Qualifications
  • Experience in a similar position, including management experience, within the VFX industry ;
  • Excellent knowledge of 3DEqualizer and Maya software ;
  • Good knowledge of Nuke, Arnold and scripting with Mel/Python ;
  • Knowledge of photography ;
  • Excellent understanding of the production pipeline ;
  • Strong knowledge of trends and new technology within the industry and specialty ;
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure and act as a positive role model and mentor.
