Position Overview

The Aquatics Centre in the Faculty of Kinesiology is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Head Lifeguard.

This position will report to the Aquatic Manager, with leadership and direction from the Aquatic Supervisor.

Schedule will consist of early morning or late evenings, and occasional weekends. Scheduled training and in-service days are mandatory and will be conducted at least three times per year. Summer months will vary. Last minute call out and dangerous or stressful conditions are possible in this position.

A key element of the Head Lifeguard position will be acting as the lead lifeguard. This role will have many hours on the pool deck actively supervising the facility.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Assisting the Manager and Supervisor with staff interviews, and new staff references checks and training.
  • Conducting on-going staff training.
  • Teaching lessions and certifications.
  • On deck mentoring, coaching and training for lifeguards and instructors.
  • Proofing, monitoring and editing Aquatic Centre schedule.
  • On deck supervision of the instructional programs.
  • Complete inventories and assist in ordering materials and chemicals.
  • Providing customer service, fielding client concerns, educating parents and family about the aquatic programs.
  • Help monitor the Aquatic Centre general email and voice mail accounts, fielding and responding to client and staff requests, concerns and complaints.
  • Inputting, updating and monitoring all course information into the online registration system accurately.
  • Marketing, brochure submission, posters, and website management.
  • Conducting daily filter room surveys and a facility walk around to check for any safety concerns
  • Performing mechanical duties including but not limited to filter tank backwashes and overhauls, monitoring chemical system and adding chemicals.
  • Responsible for receiving chemical shipments and deliveries as per the Alberta Transportation of Dangerous Goods requirements.
  • Ensuring that all staff are following required safety guidelines as per the SDS, WHMIS, TDG, OHS and in-house protocols.
  • Annual Shutdown projects.
  • Equipment repair or maintenance.
  • Other operational or custodial tasks as requested.
  • Acting as an Emergency Fire Warden.
  • Clerical and Filing duties.
  • Completing reports including incident, accident and problem solving sheets.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • 2-5 years\' experience in the aquatic environment as a lifeguard and swim instructor is required.
  • 1-2 years of supervisory experience is required.
  • Must have the following current aquatic credentials:
  • National Lifeguard - Pool OR Red Cross Pool Lifeguard
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
  • Standard First Aid OR Aquatic Emergency Care (taken within the past TWO years)
  • CPR Level C (taken within the past ONE year)
  • Pool Operators level I or II is an asset.
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer is an asset.
  • Lifesaving Society Instructor/Examiner Status is an asset.
  • First Aid Instructor is an asset.
