The role requires occasional travel with athletes to competitions outside Whitehorse; schedule adjustments will be made as necessary.
Position Overview
Flatwater North is seeking a skilled, enthusiastic, and self-motivated
Head Coach / Operations Manager
to lead the club's competitive programs and manage year-round operations. The successful candidate will oversee athlete development, guide competitive paddlers through Canoe Kayak Canada's Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) framework, and ensure the smooth functioning and financial sustainability of the club.
This is a combined position, with clearly defined coaching and operational responsibilities.
Head Coach Responsibilities
Plan, implement, and oversee training for competitive athletes, focusing on 12-17-year-old participants in the Regatta Ready and Sprint teams.
Develop programs aligned with the LTAD framework for the Training to Train and Learning to Compete stages.
Ensure athlete safety, well-being, and adherence to the athlete code of conduct.
Lead recruitment initiatives at schools, sport fairs, and community events, including outreach to local First Nations communities.
Coordinate dryland and on-water training, including spring, fall, and winter sessions.
Manage athlete participation in regattas, including registration, logistics, travel, and race preparation.
Serve as the primary liaison between athletes, parents, and the Board for performance, discipline, and program updates.
Prepare monthly and end-of-season reports for the Board of Directors.
Provide mentorship and feedback to assistant coaches and summer staff.
Operations Manager Responsibilities
Manage day-to-day club operations, including summer Canoe Kids camps (June-August).
Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise summer staff and assistant coaches.
Maintain program registration processes, participant records, and communication with parents.
Ensure safe and organized facilities, minor equipment maintenance, and make recommendations for major equipment needs.
Develop and execute fundraising initiatives, including events, community partnerships, and other opportunities.
Research, identify, and apply for grants to support club finances.
Collaborate with the Board on budget management, strategic planning, and long-term club development.
Coordinate logistics for travel and events, including boat transport, equipment set-up.
