Fort Steele Heritage Town

is a living history site dedicated to the preservation, interpretation, and enhancement of British Columbia's rich heritage. Fort Steele serves as a cultural and educational resource, engaging visitors in the stories, traditions, and historical significance of the Region. Position Summary



Fort Steele Heritage Town seeks a dedicated, skilled Baker to provide a full-service Heritage Bakery experience for our historic site. The successful candidate will be responsible for daily bakery operations, producing a variety of traditional baked goods, and developing an artisanal bread program. The ideal candidate will be a passionate leader, with an interest in creating a tangible connection to history through food experiences.

Position Duties and Responsibilities



Prepare, bake, and present a variety of heritage breads, pastries, cakes, cookies, and other baked goods using traditional and commercial methods. Develop, implement, and oversee a commercial artisan bread program, including planning production schedules, develop selling partners throughout the East Kootenay, and ensuring consistent product quality. Operate, clean, and maintain bakery equipment and tools in accordance with safety and sanitation regulations. Manage inventory, order supplies, and restock ingredients as needed to ensure efficient bakery operations. Collaborate with other staff to coordinate baking schedules and support special events or activities across the site. Train, supervise, and direct support staff or volunteers involved in bakery operations. Participate in the development and testing of new bread and baked goods, with a focus on heritage authenticity and customer appeal. Interact with visitors, sharing knowledge about heritage baking techniques and the historical significance of bakery products. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment ensuring food safety standards at all times. Collaborate with the Fort Steele Operations Supervisor to align bakery offerings with the heritage town's overall theme and visitor experience.

Knowledge and Experience



Three (3) years of experience as a baker in a commercial setting; experience with bread baking and heritage recipes preferred. Completion of a three- or four-year apprenticeship program for bakers or a college program in baking, or an equivalent combination of formal training and hands-on commercial baking experience. Strong knowledge of baking techniques, dough preparation, and recipe scaling. An understanding of Indigenous relations in this region; additionally, familiarity with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the relevant Calls to Action for Museums is an asset. This knowledge can be through education, lived or worked experience. Experience working to a budget an asset. Food Safe, First Aid and Serving it Right Certifications required.

Abilities and Skills



Ability to plan and execute a commercial bread program, including production schedules, budget, and quality control. Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking skills. Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively and engage with the public. Passion for heritage, food history, and delivering a memorable visitor experience. Ability to take on the physical aspects required for the job.
