The Harm Reduction Specialist works to support individuals and communities affected by substance use, mental health issues, and other related challenges. This role involves implementing harm reduction strategies to reduce negative health outcomes, enhance safety, and improve quality of life for individuals using substances. The Harm Reduction Specialist will provide support services, education, outreach, and resources to promote safer behaviors and empower clients toward healthier choices.

Key Responsibilities:



Client Support & Education:

Provide direct services to individuals engaging in high-risk behaviors related to substance use, including non-judgmental counseling, case management, and referrals to medical or social support services. Educate individuals on harm reduction techniques, including safer substance use practices, overdose prevention, and reducing transmission risks related to bloodborne diseases. Collaborate with Addictions worker to assist with meeting the client's needs. Offer educational materials and conduct workshops on topics such as safe needle use, safe sex, overdose response, and mental health.

Outreach & Community Engagement:

Conduct outreach and engagement activities with individuals and communities to raise awareness of harm reduction resources and reduce stigma around substance use. Build relationships with community organizations, healthcare providers, and local agencies to create a supportive network for clients. Host or support community events, such as naloxone (Narcan) training, and provide harm reduction supplies (e.g., syringes, clean kits, condoms).

Overdose Prevention:

Train individuals, families, and community members in overdose prevention strategies, including the use of naloxone (Narcan) and other life-saving techniques. Respond to and provide support during overdose situations, ensuring timely access to medical care.

Data Collection & Reporting:

Maintain accurate and confidential client records, document services provided, and track outcomes related to harm reduction goals. Collect and analyze data to assess the effectiveness of harm reduction programs and make recommendations for improvements. Submit timely reports as required by the organization and funding sources.

Program Development & Evaluation:

Collaborate with team members to develop and implement harm reduction programs and initiatives tailored to community needs. Participate in program evaluation efforts, providing feedback and insights on program impact and improvements.

Advocacy & Policy Engagement:

Advocate for harm reduction policies and practices within the organization, local government, and community settings. Stay informed about relevant laws, regulations, and policies related to substance use, harm reduction, and public health.

Qualifications:



Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Public Health, Nursing, Psychology, or a related field, or

equivalent experience.

Previous experience working with individuals who use substances, in harm reduction, social services, or public health settings is preferred. Experience in outreach, community organizing, or client-focused services is a plus.

Skills & Abilities:

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and build rapport with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Knowledge of harm reduction strategies, substance use treatment, and public health best practices. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Understanding of cultural competence and ability to work with marginalized and at-risk populations. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information responsibly.

Certifications & Licenses:

Certification in overdose prevention (e.g., Naloxone training) preferred. First Aid/CPR certification may be required or preferred.

Working Conditions:



Flexibility to work in various community settings (e.g., outreach sites, health clinics, shelters). Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed for outreach and education activities. Occasional travel to offsite locations may be required.

Physical Requirements:



Ability to lift and carry materials and supplies (up to 25 pounds). Ability to remain standing or walk for extended periods during outreach activities.
