Hardware Engineering Lead – Cinematic & Experiential Lighting

Burnaby, BC, CA, Canada

Job Description

Burnaby, BC | Full-time

Light up the world's biggest productions... and the wildest experiences.

We are not just making circuit boards; we are making movie magic, jaw-dropping props, and immersive experiences that stop people in their tracks. From

Avatar 2 & 3

to

Deadpool 2

to

Star Trek Discovery

, our tech has powered sets and installations seen by millions. Now we are in full

start-up mode 2.0

, building the next generation of LED lighting systems and custom solutions that will change how the world's biggest productions and brands light their stories.

Who We Are

Better Way Lighting is a scrappy, ambitious crew of engineers and designers obsessed with pushing LED tech further than anyone thought possible. We design and build

props, lighting systems, and bespoke solutions

trusted by the film and TV industry, but that is just the start.

We have also worked on some of the most

elaborate brand activations

and are growing fast into

tradeshows and commercial experiences

. With experiences becoming a central way that brands connect with audiences, we are chasing the opportunity to design and create the

coolest, most unforgettable real-world moments

.

We have survived the ups and downs of the industry and come out sharper, faster, and hungrier. Today, top studios, global brands, and creators are watching what we are building, and they want more.

The Role

We are looking for a

Hardware Engineering Lead

who is ready to take the wheel on our core hardware platform. This is not a back-office engineering job. You will be designing the boards, drivers, and systems that make our lights work on screen and shine in experiences. You will guide architecture decisions, mentor younger engineers, and collaborate across firmware, mechanical, and industrial design teams to bring jaw-dropping products to life.

If you love solving hairy hardware challenges, geeking out on LED drivers, and want your designs to light up everything from blockbuster films to unforgettable brand activations, this role is for you.

What You'll Do

Own PCB design and hardware upgrades

(ESP32-P4 and peripherals at the core).

Architect power electronics

: LED drivers, current regulation, thermal stability.

Team up with firmware engineers

: define interfaces, bring up boards, debug together.

Shepherd designs to production

: schematic capture, layout reviews, prototype validation.

Mentor and elevate

: guide junior engineers and collaborate with industrial designers and manufacturers.
What You Bring

5+ years in PCB design for embedded systems (lighting, power electronics is a bonus). Strong skills in analog and digital design, DC/DC converters, and mixed-signal integrity. Comfort in PCB tools (Altium preferred, KiCad works too). Experience with 32-bit MCUs (ESP32, STM32, Cortex-M). Hands-on debugging wizardry with scopes, analyzers, lab gear. Awareness of EMI, EMC, thermal, and safety design practices.

Extra credit if you have:

High-current LED driver or dimming experience. Knowledge of DMX, Art-Net, or RDM lighting protocols. Wireless integration (BLE, Wi-Fi). Regulatory testing know-how. Python or MATLAB scripting for test automation. A filmmaker's eye for how light feelson camera.
Why Join Us

Your work is on screen and on stage

: your designs will light up films, commercials, activations, and immersive experiences.

Creative freedom

: small team, no corporate layers, your ideas matter.

Big stage, small crew

: join at a pivotal moment where your impact is multiplied.

Career-defining

: grow with us as we scale from scrappy startup to reposition ourselves as a global leader.

Culture that clicks

: serious about the craft, not about suits or politics.
Future Growth

This is a role with real leadership potential. In our previous growth phase, the hardware engineer had a

dedicated software team of four full-time developers

working under them to bring projects to life. We plan to rebuild that capacity as we expand. The right person in this seat will not only lead hardware design today but could also

scale into leading the entire hardware and embedded systems team

as we grow into new markets.

How to Apply

Send us your resume and a short note on what excites you about this role. If you have portfolio pieces, project links, or stories about how you solved tough hardware problems, we would love to see them.
