Compactica is an emerging startup based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, dedicated to pioneering efficient and reliable solutions within the geotechnical space. Fresh off our recent funding success, we're embarking on an ambitious journey to develop a groundbreaking SaaS solution aimed at transforming onsite testing practices at large construction sites. Our technology promises not only to save significant time and money for our clients but also to enhance the reliability and validity of test results.

We're on the lookout for talented Hardware Designer to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of developing innovative projects that will position

Compactica as a leader in the industry. If you're passionate about making a tangible impact and are eager to contribute to the evolution of geotechnical engineering solutions, we'd love to hear from you.

Integrate various sensors (e.g. accelerometers, GPS, Infrared Camera and Temperature sensors) with custom electronics for reliable field data acquisition. Design and develop ruggedized electronics and sensor interfaces capable of operating in challenging geotechnical environments (soil, water, vibration, temperature extremes). Own the full hardware design lifecycle, including requirements analysis, circuit design, schematic capture, component selection, PCB layout, and documentation. Managing compliance and standard certification process. Oversee production readiness and deployment, coordinating with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure smooth inventory management, assembly, and rollout of hardware solutions. Provide technical leadership to junior engineers. Collaborate with software developers to ensure hardware compatibility and optimize system performance.

How We Work

Iterative Development - As a startup, we need to move fast. As such, we are proponents of a lean loop development process that works quickly to create a minimum viable product that we iterate on over time.

Customer focused - We work closely with our customers who are part of the development lifecycle. They will become the alpha and beta users of our product and provide industry relevant feedback to ensure the solution meets market needs.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years of experience in hardware design, including hands-on experience with PCB design. Proficiency in using PCB design software such as Kicad, Altium Designer, Eagle, or similar. Relevant experience of hardware design flow such as component selection, digital and analog circuit design, schematic capture, layout, simulation and validation. Hands on experience with lab tools such as oscilloscopes, power supplies and soldering equipment. Knowledge of signal integrity and high-speed signal fundamentals. Experience writing firmware for sensors and microcontrollers. Experience with battery management systems and power management systems. Experience with ingress protection and ruggedization. Experience with 3D cad software is a plus. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team. Strong communication skills and the ability to document and explain technical details clearly and comprehensively.
