POSITION SUMMARY:

Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is currently seeking two enthusiastic individuals for temporary part-time positions in our ROM Hands-on Galleries (Hands-on Biodiversity, Schad Gallery, and WonderWorks). We are looking for individuals who are friendly, resourceful, and dedicated to providing exceptional assistance to our museum visitors.

As part of our team, you will have the exciting opportunity to help museum visitors explore the fascinating world of plants and animals, showcasing their incredible diversity and natural interdependence. We are looking for candidates who are not only passionate about culture, the arts, natural history, and science but also skilled in the art of storytelling to create engaging and educational experiences for visitors of all ages, abilities, and communities.

Please be aware that this position requires flexibility in your schedule, including availability for evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Facilitation and Educational Development

  • Engage visitors in hands-on experiential learning using a deep understanding of educational pedagogies.
  • Stay updated on educational pedagogies, gallery content, programming, and policies and adapt as necessary.
  • Conduct research to develop innovative activities and resources that enhance visitor learning experiences.
  • Proficiently utilize and stay current with digital, audio, and visual technologies, including equipment/tools and applications/platforms.
Volunteer Support and Training
  • Train and mentor volunteers in effective educational pedagogies, exemplary facilitation skills, and exceptional customer service.
  • Foster the development of volunteer knowledge, skills, and abilities through modeling, encouragement, observation, and constructive feedback.
  • Create and implement activities and resources that facilitate ongoing learning and growth among volunteers.
Gallery Operations and Safety
  • Ensure adherence to Galleries policies, regulations, and guidelines, including conflict resolution with visitors, volunteers, and staff.
  • Execute operational tasks as directed by the Gallery Coordinator or alternate personnel.
  • Respond promptly to urgent situations, following established ROM protocols.
  • Handle artifacts/objects/specimens and digital/audio/visual equipment/tools with utmost care and safety.
  • Provide educational and technical support to internal and external partners when required.
  • Perform any other relevant duties as needed to support the overall functioning of the gallery.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Completion of at least two (2) years of post-secondary education in a field related to education, natural history, world cultures, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of direct experience working with children, youth, families, and volunteers in formal or informal educational settings, demonstrating the ability to effectively engage the public through interactive activities.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills, coupled with a positive and encouraging attitude.
  • Proven ability to take initiative, work both independently and collaboratively, and adapt effectively within a dynamic and ever-changing environment.
  • Experience working with digital, audio, and visual technologies in an educational context.
  • Oral fluency in French is considered an asset.
Salary and Terms of Employment

START DATE: October 2, 2023
OPEN DATE: September 7, 2023
CLOSE DATE: September 22, 2023
STATUS: Part-time Contract
EMPLOYEE GROUP: OPSEU Local 543
HOURLY RATE: $23.64 - 27.01
SCHEDULE: up to 24 hours weekly
PROBATIONARY PERIOD: 420 hours or six (6) months
LOCATION (onsite/hybrid): Toronto, ON
