PART-TIME SPECIAL CONSTABLE POOL
Notice/Date: #2022 - 002 \xe2\x80\x93 January 1, 2023 Job Title: Part-Time Special Constable, Courts Location: John Sopinka Court House (45 Main St E, Hamilton, ON), may be required to respond to other locations, as necessary Hours of Work: Monday to Sunday, working eight (8) and ten (10) hour shifts, starting anywhere between 7:00 am and 11:00 am. Salary: Schedule 8E - $34.472-$40.559 per hour, plus 14% in lieu of benefits, 4% vacation pay (per Civilian Collective Agreement 2021) JOB SUMMARY Under the direction of the Special Constable Supervisor, Court Security, the Special Constable is responsible for the care, control, and transportation of prisoners, and the overall security of the assigned court facilities. DUTIES A Part-Time Special Constable\xe2\x80\x99s primary duties are ensuring the security and control of prisoners, the court rooms, cells, and adjoining areas. Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Ensuring the security and control of prisoners
  • Monitoring Cell areas (maintaining visual, audible and electronic monitoring)
  • Searching & classifying new prisoners, securing seized items, and completing Records of Arrest.
  • Searching persons at court facilities, utilizing the walkthrough metal detectors and handheld wands
  • Daily searches: Court rooms, cells, and adjoining areas
  • Making arrests and completing necessary paperwork
  • Transporting prisoners between courts, detention centres, holding areas, and medical facilities (including out of town escorts)
  • Searching & classifying new prisoners, securing seized items, and completing Records of Arrest
  • Assisting all levels of the judicial system
Attend and successfully complete Use of Force training on an annual basis. REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum grade 12, or the equivalent.
  • Minimum six (6) months of practical job related experience, such as law prevention or security related roles.
  • Valid Class G Driver\'s License, or the equivalent, with no more than six (6) accumulated demerit points, permitting you to drive an automobile in Ontario with full driving privileges
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR (Basic Rescuer Level C) certification.
  • Must be able to obtain/keep a Special Constable Appointment designation, throughout their time in this position (requires passing of the HPS PREP Test, without shuttle run, if not currently serving as a Special Constable).
  • Must be in good physical and medical condition, and capable of handling difficult prisoners.
  • No criminal record for which a pardon has not been received.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact effectively with (sometimes abusive) prisoners, police personnel, judges and other members of the court system, government agencies, and members of the public, and establish and maintain effective working relationships, and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Self-control (including the ability to work with difficult prisoners).
  • Good organizational skills, and the ability to be adaptable when performing assignments.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Integrity.
