The Seabird Island Band is a multi-faceted First Nations Band that includes government, business, service, and nonprofit services. Position Summary:
The Halq’emeylem Language Teacher is responsible for teaching students (K-7) how to speak, write, and understand Seabird Islands’ traditional language – Halq’emeylem.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelors of Education with specialization in Languages.
  • Complete understanding and fluency in the Halq’emeylem Language and understanding of culture and traditions impacting the language. Knowledge, respect and understanding of Stó:lō
  • culture, traditions and language is considered a requirement.
  • Must be a certified BC Teacher.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, Internet, and Email).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.
  • Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Teach students how to interpret Halq’emeylem.
  • Translate Halq’emeylem into the English language to help students understand.
  • Provide instruction in Halq’emeylem literature and cross-cultural studies.
  • Teach students how to read, write, and understand Halq’emeylem language.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student.
  • Develop student understanding and appreciation of traditional culture Halq’emeylem language.
  • Create instructional resources for use in the classroom.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities.
  • Create positive educational climate for students to learn in.
  • Meet course and school-wide student performance goals.
  • Create lesson plans and modify accordingly throughout the year.
  • Create projects designed to enhance the understanding of the traditional language.
  • Preparation of report cards and progress reports.
  • Referring attendance and behavior concerns to administration.
  • Implement a home reading program that encourages reading at home for enjoyment.
  • Mandatory attendance at staff meetings.
  • Mandatory participation in professional development days and activities.
  • Be present at school events.
  • On-going correspondence with parents.
  • Problem solving any issues with students or parents.
  • Meetings with administration as required to address any emerging issues.
  • Abiding by all policies of Seabird Island Community School, the BC Ministry of Education, Independent Schools Branch and Seabird Island Band.
  • Ensuring compliance with the Seabird Island Community School Teacher Code of Conduct.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your supervisor, Manager, Director, or the CAO
