GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, the Guard maintains the security of the cellblock by conducting routine checks on prisoners to ensure their safety, health, and welfare. Guards are responsible for maintaining order, reporting, and responding to incidents, distributing meals/medication to prisoners, and completing required paperwork such as maintaining the logbook, prisoner ledgers and record sheets.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Monitor prisoners at continuous intervals, monitoring and reporting any irregularities or unusual behaviour of prisoners or visitors and update the guardroom logbook accordingly.
  • Maintain and update records, including but not limited to, prisoner in/out ledger, filing, records, photos, Police Reporting and Occurrence System (PROS), and Police Access Tool (PAT) on a daily basis.
  • Download CCTV footage as requested by RCMP.
  • Prevent unauthorized persons from entering guardroom facilities.
  • Accurately obtain, assess, and review information from a variety of secure RCMP databases including but not limited to Police Reporting and Occurrence System (PROS) and Police Access Tool (PAT).
  • Report any damage or equipment breakdown, and all unusual circumstances to the RCMP member or supervisor.
  • Monitor the radio and telephone in the cellblock.
  • Assist RCMP with prisoner searches as required.
  • Conduct thorough searches inside cells after the release of a prisoner and discard all noticeable litter.
  • Complete a daily Passover with the oncoming shift to share information and review shift documents.
  • Ensure prisoner belongings are secured and safely stored in the designated area and returned according to policy.
  • Deliver prescribed medication to prisoners according to directions and update the prisoner record sheet accordingly.
  • Assist with inventory, ordering supplies and prisoner meals.
  • Represent the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and/or RCMP in Court when it is deemed necessary.
  • Handle and dispense cellblock laundry.
  • Perform janitorial duties as required in the absence of a custodian.
  • Review all polices and changes to legislation as required.
  • Assist with on-the-job training of new employees.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend written orders and have proven organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work independently.
  • Ability to pay attention to details and notice unusual circumstances as they arise.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with partners and key stakeholders in the community.
  • Must be able to understand RCMP policy and requirements.
  • Ensure that policies and procedure are followed by all visitors to cellblock.
  • Ability to remain calm and react quickly in emergency and medical situations.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy when dealing with prisoners, visitors, and peers.
  • Ability to remain professional and respectful when dealing with difficult situations and persons.
  • Ability to cope with vulgar language and continuous noise.
  • Must use a high degree of discretion due to the confidentiality of the work environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including spreadsheets and databases.
  • Ability to complete training as required to improve/maintain skills or to ensure adherence with regulated standards.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • One (1) year of experience in a correctional institution, law enforcement, or comparable security position is required.
  • Previous experience working for the RCMP is an asset.
  • Emergency First Aid Certificate with AED is required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Immunizations are strongly recommended for work in unsanitary conditions.
  • Must be medically and physically able to perform all duties of the position on an ongoing basis.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain an RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance is required.
