Why KPMG Tax Incentive Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SR&ED)?

The R&D Tax Incentive team at KPMG works with engineering/technology clients across a broad spectrum of industries (including, but not limited to Gaming, Fintech, Healthcare, etc.). Our IT team engages clients on projects where IT technologies are pushing the boundaries of the current state of the art. For these types of projects, the Canadian government offers R&D tax credits (SR&ED program) to incentivize the continued development and to offset the cost of innovation.

KPMG Tax Incentive Practice has an exciting opportunity for SR&ED Advisors (Intern/Co-op) to join our team in Winter 2024 and Summer 2024!

** Please note that this role operates out of KPMG\'s Vaughan office in a hybrid working model.
What you will do

  • Execute internal and client facing project engagements, develop deliverables and work independently and in teams as required by the varying nature of different project requirements.
  • Work with the Engineering Manager, participate in meetings towards identification of client projects that may qualify for the SR&ED Program and gathering the required technical information to articulate/justify SR&ED eligibility.
  • Keep abreast of current and latest trends in science and technology with focus on Information Technology, Software Development, Systems Engineering, Communications, Electronics and emerging technologies (e.g. machine learning and artificial intelligence applications).
  • Contribute to the development of software automation tools/solutions to address client problems.
  • Conduct targeted research/analysis on leading practices and current trends in IT and digital innovation.
  • Conduct data analysis.
  • Support KPMG project teams in developing client deliverables (specifically project justifications to highlight technological innovations).
  • Be exposed to new and exciting technologies and state-of-the art innovations in a wide range of industries.
  • Gain valuable business experience to complement your technical training.

What you bring to the role
  • Working towards a University degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other related field (prefer students who have completed at least 2 years of study).
  • Minimum of 1- 2 co-op terms with some professional experience in Software Development or Information Technology.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with the SR&ED program is a definite asset.
  • Student Membership in one of PEO, IEEE, ACM, ISP or similar professional organization is an asset.
  • Experience in other R&D related government tax incentive programs such as IRAP, NSERC an asset.
  • Good working knowledge of Excel, VBA, SQL, SharePoint a definite asset
  • Experience/knowledge of JIRA or related tools a definite asset.
  • Learns quickly and adapts to new situations, flexible and comfortable working with ambiguity
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to clearly identify problems and develop creative solutions
  • Excellent communications (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to work within teams and independently under limited supervision
  • Professionalism, a high degree of personal responsibility, integrity, and an ability to work with internal and external teams on time compressed engagements, often on highly confidential matters is mandatory
  • Technical knowledge of or experience with principles of software development/design, and design or network architecture
  • Experience working on IT processes, IT control frameworks, and projects with knowledge of and experience using business analysis and project management methodologies
