Our Team

The Thompson Mines Technical Services (MTS) Team is integral to the success of the operations in being a safe and reliable producer. We aim to design and plan safe, sustainable ore extraction through technical excellence in the areas of geology, mine planning, ventilation, backfill, ground control, drill/blast, and survey control.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Ground Control Engineer to join our Mines Technical Services Team in Thompson, Manitoba. This is a permanent position.

The Ground Control Engineer supports the Ground Control Program during execution, in Vale\xe2\x80\x99s Thompson, MB Mine facilities. The role holder works with an effective ground control team, including Ground Control Engineers, Mine Technician/Technologists and/or Engineers in Training, to provide Ground Control Services to the mine operations.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Recommend action to ensure that safety and stability of mine excavations is maintained with respect to geotechnical requirements.
  • Provide day to day technical support and coordination for managing site specific ground control risk management programs and work closely with the technical execution teams at the mine sites.
  • Provide technical support, advise and assist the mine operators and technical staff regarding ground control strategies and methods.
  • Assist in conducting geotechnical risk assessment of the Mine Plan of all responsible mines to ensure that mining sequence and mine layouts are optimized to reduce the risk to safety and production.
  • Contribute to the implementation of new systems/processes and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Integrate the 0\xe2\x80\x9324-month Ground Control Plan into the 0\xe2\x80\x933-month mine execution plan.
  • Document results on the genesis of major ground instability events, including mechanism, geologic and geometric controls etc. Incorporate this insight into both the short and long term mine plan.
  • Liaise with Mine Operations for alignment on the Ground Control component of the mine plan.
  • Develop site specific field instrumentation program to monitor ground behavior with the progress of mining.
  • Assist with geomechanics project work involving mining methods, stope and pillar design, mining sequencing and ground support design if required.
  • Provide on-call duties if required for technical assistance with ground stability issues at the mines.
About You

Education:
  • Engineering degree in Mine Engineering with a Professional Engineering Designation Preferred.
  • Eligible for registration as a licensed professional engineer with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba
  • New graduates are welcome to apply.
Experience:
  • 3 years of underground mining experience is an asset, however EITs with less experience are encouraged to apply.
Skills:
  • Expert knowledge of MS office Products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of mining standards and guidance documents.
  • Demonstrated understanding of underground mine design, mining technology, and underground mining activities.
  • Familiar with RocScience Software such as Dips, UnWedge, RS2, and RSData.
  • Experience with 3D mine design software (Deswik preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ground control instrumentation.
  • Strong verbal, written and analytical communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Drive for sustainable results with a strong focus on continuous improvement.
