About the Opportunity


Reporting to the Grief and Bereavement Operations Lead and accountable to the Health Services Manager, the Bereavement Coordinator provides leadership to health care professionals within Nova Scotia Health to meet a broad range of bereavement support needs. The Bereavement Coordinator consults with and facilitates education to health care professionals who are caring for dying adults and their families in the Northern Zone Palliative Care Service as well as acts as a resources to support other staff in Nova Scotia Health. The Bereavement Coordinator develops and coordinates a bereavement program for the Palliative Care Service and other staff and volunteers, that includes an education program, on grief, bereavement, and related topics. The coordinator would work with local community groups to support grief literacy and a partnerships approach.

Key Duties/Responsibilities


  • Coordinates and implements a bereavement follow-up program for families in the Palliative Care Service.
  • Coordinates and facilitates adult bereavement groups for families in the Integrated Palliative Care Service.
  • Contributes to the development of standards for bereavement care; collaborates with community groups to support this work
  • Identifies and builds effective relationships with applicable community agencies, ensuring a positive approach and ongoing partnership relationship, supporting grief literacy and knowledge.
  • Contributes to the development of policies and procedures for bereavement care.
  • Develops and coordinates education for professionals and volunteers in the area for grief.
  • Collaborates with and is a resource to educators and other staff in the area of grief.
  • Researches and identifies unmet grief needs and develops, coordinates and implements educational programs and services to addresses identified gaps.
  • Develops information and a communication plan to increase the public\'s knowledge of anticipatory and post death grief in the context of normal and healthy responses to loss.
  • Collaborates with community agencies in promoting grief awareness, educational opportunities and available resources to Nova Scotia Health staff and volunteers.


About You


We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s Degree in Social Work
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia College of Social Workers (NSCSW)
  • Minimum of three (3) years clinical experience in a Palliative Care setting
  • Experience working within community agencies an asset
  • Degree, certification courses or workshops pertaining to grief care or thanatology an asset
  • Experience in grief and bereavement
  • Demonstrated skill as a communicator and group facilitator
  • Evidence of extensive knowledge of community resources
  • Evidence of ability to work independently with a multidisciplinary team as well as with both hospital and community based services/agencies
  • Demonstrated use of innovative problem solving and application of evidence based practice to patient services
  • Valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and access to reliable transportation
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred

Compensation and Incentives


$37.13 - $48.81 Hourly
