Position Summary:
Smoky Lake Town and Country Golf Club is a community-focused, non-for-profit 9-hole golf course seeking a hands-on, dedicated Golf Course Superintendent to manage all aspects of golf course maintenance. This role is critical to maintaining the quality of play and upholding our mission to provide affordable, accessible, and enjoyable golf for members and the public. The Superintendent will oversee turf care, equipment, grounds staff (including volunteers), and help manage the maintenance budget with a strong emphasis on stewardship and sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:
Turf & Grounds Management:
Daily maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, roughs, bunkers, and practice areas.
Execute agronomic practices including mowing, irrigation, fertilization, aeration, and pest management using industry best practices suited to a non-profit budget.
Irrigation & Water Management:
Monitor, operate, and repair the course's irrigation system to ensure efficient water use and turf health.
Volunteer & Staff Oversight:
Supervise and train grounds crew and volunteers. Foster a collaborative, community-focused team environment.
Schedule and oversee day-to-day maintenance tasks.
Equipment Maintenance:
Maintain and perform minor repairs on maintenance equipment. Coordinate with external mechanics or vendors for major repairs when needed.
Budget & Inventory:
Assist in developing and managing the annual maintenance budget.
Purchase and track supplies responsibly and cost-effectively.
Environmental & Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure proper handling, application, and storage of fertilizers, pesticides, and chemicals in compliance with local and state regulations.
Course Improvement Projects:
Lead or assist with small renovation projects, drainage improvements, and volunteer-driven beautification efforts.
Community Engagement:
Work with the Board and committees to support events, fundraisers, and educational activities related to golf course operations and environmental stewardship.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
Capable of lifting 50 lbs, operating machinery, and performing manual labor
Flexible availability, including early mornings and occasional weekends or holidays
Preferred Qualifications:
2-5 years of golf course maintenance experience; supervisory or lead experience (preferred but not required)
Certificate or degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field (preferred but not required)
Pesticide Applicator License (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
Knowledge of best practices for turf management in budget-conscious environments
Strong communication and leadership skills with a positive, community-first attitude

Since 1978, our volunteer Board of Directors has guided the club's growth, transforming sand greens into lush grass, expanding the clubhouse in 2006, and adding a commercialized kitchen with a patio overlooking White Earth Creek Valley in 2009.
