Graduate Program Director (GPD)

Strategic Foresight and Innovation Program

Reporting to the Dean, School of Graduate Studies and the Dean from their home faculty, the Graduate Program Director (GPD) position provides oversight and leadership for the Strategic Foresight and Innovation (SFI) program. The GPD will facilitate the decolonization of disciplines for this program in practice and theory, and provide oversight, leadership, and teaching for the programs as well as teaching within the program specializations and in relevant undergraduate programs.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The GPD, SFI will work with the Dean, School of Graduate Studies, the Dean from their home faculty, and the Graduate Program Committee to:

  • Oversee student recruitment and admissions processes
  • Advise and support graduate students; monitor and review their progress and academic standing on atermly basis
  • Participate in graduate program reviews in compliance with the OCAD University Institutional Quality Assurance Process (IQAP)
  • Represent the program on the Senate Graduate Studies Committee and Graduate Awards and Scholarship Committee
  • Represent the School of Graduate Studies on University Committees as requested by the Dean, School of Graduate Studies Chair and regularly convene the Graduate Program Committee and Admissions Committee
  • Support the arrangement of graduate exhibitions & events as appropriate
  • Arrange for visiting speakers and workshops at OCAD University (if applicable)
  • Recommend to the Deans of the Faculties of Art, Design, and Arts and Sciences teaching assignments for their approval
  • Coordinate supervisory assignments for the Major Research Project
  • Play an active role in developing research capacity in the graduate programs
  • Provide information and support to program faculty regarding supervisory duties, the Major Research Project process (if applicable), and other program elements
  • Provide advising and support to students regarding the program, special studies, elective selection and the Major Research Project process (if applicable), and progress through the program
  • Review and approve course syllabi and special study proposals
  • Provide oversight and guidence regarding Research Ethics Board approval for MRPs and courses
  • Oversee the graduate supervisory relationship between faculty and students and facilitate the resolution of individual faculty and student matters as they arise;
  • Convene external advisory groups (if applicable)
  • Establish, develop and maintain relationships with partner institutions
  • Participate in marketing and recruitment efforts, which includes updating marketing materials and developing program content for the OCAD University Website
  • Contribute to fundraising efforts for student scholarships and bursaries
  • Steward and operate within the established budgets for the program
  • In conjunction with the Associate Deans, other GPDs, Studio Management, and IT Services and Facilities, support the management of facilities and allocation of resources and address issues arising from studio, computer and classroom facilities and ensure Health and Safety
  • Ensure the academic excellence and integrity of the Strategic Foresight and Innovation program, as well as alignment of all teaching and learning practices with academic standards and university policies (including but not limited to Graduate Studies Academic Policies)
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must hold a Tenure-Track or Tenured appointment at OCAD University
  • Graduate degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent professional practice/experience
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of teaching experience, or equivalent, with an excellent record of professional activity in a relevant discipline, as well as an affinity for cross-disciplinary dialogue and collaboration
  • An excellent record of projects, publications, and/or exhibitions at the national and international level
  • Understanding of the six priorities of OCAD U Academic Plan, and other Strategic Plans
  • Familiarity with the current Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) is considered an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication and organization skill
  • Experience proactively advancing decolonization, diversity, equity and sustainability in curriculum and in teaching, scholarship, and creative/professional activities
  • A lived experience and/or a solid theoretical/conceptual understanding of intersectional racialized and/or Indigenous epistemologies in this program is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity, and proven ability to work effectively and collegially with a diverse population, guided by an understanding of the ways in which equity, Indigenous knowledge, inclusivity, accessibility and sustainability are fundamental to the quality of student experience
  • Demonstrated academic leadership, collegiality, conflict resolution skills, sensitivity to the needs to students and the ability to take initiative; student academic counselling experience an asset
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The appointment will be made for three (3) years, from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026, with the possibility of renewal for an additional term. This position is only open to current OCAD U Faculty members with Tenure-Track or Tenured status.

REMUNERATION:

This academic leadership role includes an annual administrative stipend, access to a research and travel allowance and administrative release (scheduling to be determined in consultation with the Dean, School of Graduate Studies and home faculty Dean.)
