Tetra Tech is currently seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to work with our ice engineering team as part of our regional Arctic Engineering Group. Ice engineering is an industry that is experiencing substantial growth and generating numerous opportunities across the North. It includes engineering for load-bearing scenarios on freshwater ice, but can also include other frozen materials, such as tailings or muskeg. The successful candidate will work on ice engineering projects during ice season and will have the opportunity to work on other engineering projects in the summer months.

We recognize that many candidates will not have direct experience with ice engineering or ice construction. What is important is that the individual has strong practical skills and is ready to take on a new challenge with a knowledgeable and supportive team. We view this hire as a long-term investment and are looking for a strong candidate who is dedicated to establishing a position with our team and developing a specialization in ice engineering. The ice engineering team is based out of Edmonton, however alternative work arrangements are available for suitable candidates.

Tetra Tech is an industry leader in the field of ice engineering and has decades of experience providing client solutions in this growing field of practice. We have played a key role in developing several best practice guidelines, including Alberta\xe2\x80\x99s \xe2\x80\x9cBest Practice for Building and Working Safely on Ice Covers in Alberta\xe2\x80\x9d and the Transportation Association of Canada\xe2\x80\x99s \xe2\x80\x9cGuidelines for the Construction and Operation of Winter Roads.\xe2\x80\x9d Tetra Tech\xe2\x80\x99s ice engineering team was responsible for safe ice operations in movies such as \xe2\x80\x9cThe Ice Road\xe2\x80\x9d and the first season of the TV show \xe2\x80\x9cIce Road Truckers\xe2\x80\x9d.

Services are focused on load-bearing scenarios such as winter roads and ice bridges, ice pad design for stationary loads, frozen tailings, and other floating, frozen cover applications. There can also be opportunities to participate in research and development projects, based on client and industry needs.

Ice season is generally from November to April. Proposals and design work are common in November and December. January to April involves frequent fieldwork to support ice construction and operations.
