JOB OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Division Director, the Geotechnical Materials Testing Lab and Field Supervisor is responsible for the efficient and compliant operation of the geotechnical testing laboratory and field services. This role oversees daily technical and administrative activities, including managing specialized equipment, maintaining inventory of geotechnical supplies, and ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.
The supervisor plays a key role in scheduling and allocating lab and field resources to support a wide range of geotechnical investigations, such as soil, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt testing. Responsibilities include preparing samples, calibrating and maintaining testing equipment, and ensuring accurate documentation and reporting of test results. The role also provides logistical and technical support to field technicians, supervises their work, and ensures consistency in testing procedures across both lab and field environments.
Success in this role requires strong organizational skills, technical proficiency in geotechnical testing methods, and the ability to foster collaboration between lab and field teams to deliver high-quality, timely data that supports engineering and construction decisions.

Qualifications, skills and experience

Minimum 5+ years of experience in geotechnical materials testing with exposure to both lab and field environments
Prior experience in leadership or supervisory role is preferred
Experience working on construction, infrastructure, mining and facilities projects
Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously
Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field
Certification in materials testing (CCIL Laboratory and Field) strongly preferred
Valid driver's license and clean driving record
Safety certifications such as WHMIS, First Aid, or H2S Alive may be required depending on field conditions
Strong knowledge of geotechnical testing procedures for soil, aggregate, concrete and asphalt
Proficiency in using laboratory and field-testing equipment including sieves, Proctor molds, nuclear densometers and concrete cylinders
Familiarity with ASTM, CSA, and AASHTO standards for materials testing
Ability to interpret and validate test results and prepare accurate technical reports
Experience with equipment calibration and maintenance protocols
Experience in scheduling and resource allocation for lab and field teams
Inventory management and procurement of lab supplies and equipment
Strong understanding of safety proto9cols and regulatory compliance
Excellent client relations and communication skills and ability to manage project deliverables

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinate Daily Testing Project Tasks
Oversee the day-to-day activities of the geotechnical materials testing laboratory and field teams, ensuring efficient workflow and timely completion of testing assignments.
Manage Equipment and Inventory
Maintain and calibrate testing equipment; manage inventory of lab supplies and field tools to ensure readiness and compliance with testing standards.
Ensure Compliance and Safety
Enforce safety protocols and ensure all lab and field operations comply with relevant industry standards (e.g., ASTM, CSA, AASHTO) and regulatory requirements.
Schedule and Resource Allocation
Develop and manage schedules for lab and field-testing projects, coordinating personnel and resources to meet project timelines and client expectations.
Support Field Technicians
Provide logistical and technical support to field staff, including sample preparation, equipment setup, and troubleshooting during field investigations.
Supervise and Mentor Staff
Supervise field technicians, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback to ensure high-quality work and professional development.
Quality Control and Reporting
Review and validate test results for accuracy and completeness; prepare and submit technical reports and documentation in accordance with project requirements.
Client and Project Coordination
Liaise with project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure testing requirements are clearly understood and met throughout the project lifecycle.
Continuous Improvement
Identify opportunities to improve lab and field processes, enhance data quality, and increase operational efficiency.
Key Accountabilities
SAFETY
Actively participate in and promote corporate and client HSE programs, ensuring all lab and field activities meet safety standards.
Ensure proper use, maintenance, and calibration of equipment to minimize risk and ensure safe operation.
Conduct routine safety checks in the lab and support field teams in maintaining safe work environments.
Report and document safety incidents, near misses, and corrective actions in accordance with company protocols.
Support a culture of safety by modeling safe behaviors and encouraging continuous improvement.
Lab and Field Operations
Oversee and coordinate daily laboratory and field-testing activities to ensure timely and accurate execution in compliance with standards and project specifications.
Supervise and mentor field technicians, providing training as needed to ensure consistency in testing procedures and quality of data collected.
Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory and field equipment in accordance with CCIL requirements to guarantee compliance with testing standards.
Maintain inventory of testing materials, supplies, and equipment, ensuring readiness and minimizing downtime.
Prepare samples and equipment for field deployment and ensure proper documentation and chain of custody.
Project Support and Coordination
Collaborate with project managers and engineers to understand testing requirements and align resources accordingly.
Schedule and allocate lab and field personnel to meet project timelines and client expectations.
Ensure accurate and timely reporting of test results, including data validation and documentation.
Assist in the preparation of quotes, estimates, and project documentation as needed.
Communicate effectively with internal teams and clients to resolve issues and ensure project success.
Quality and Compliance
Maintain CCIL certification requirements for the laboratory and testing personnel.
Review, verify, and approve test data and reports before submission to clients.
Implement and enforce quality control procedures to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
Ensure all testing activities adhere to relevant standards (e.g., ASTM, CSA, AASHTO) and regulatory requirements.
Maintain organized records of test results, equipment logs, and safety documentation.
Participate in internal audits and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Team Leadership and Development
Provide guidance and mentorship to field technicians, fostering skill development and professional growth.
Support onboarding and training of new staff in lab and field procedures.
Promote a collaborative and respectful work environment across lab and field teams.
