About the Role


As the Geotechnical Engineering Discipline Lead , you will provide technical expertise, leadership, and guidance across a wide range of geotechnical projects spanning infrastructure, land development, and mining. You will be responsible for leading geotechnical investigations, design, analysis, and high-quality reporting while mentoring junior and intermediate engineers.


This role plays a vital part in expanding our geotechnical capabilities across Canada. You will collaborate with Regional Operations Managers to support business development, proposal preparation, best practice implementation, and strategic hiring.


Additionally, you will provide oversight and technical support to our materials testing team, which operates from three in-house CCIL Certified Labs. Your leadership will help ensure that quality standards are met and exceeded as we continue to grow.


This role is based in Edmonton, Alberta and requires occasional travel to support our regional operations across Alberta. Relocation Support Available - We provide support to help with the costs and logistics of relocating to Edmonton.


Key Responsibilities


Lead geotechnical engineering services, including investigations, design, and reporting.


Provide mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers and materials testing staff.


Collaborate with regional operations to implement best practices and support key hires.


Assist with business development, proposal writing, and securing new project opportunities.


Oversee geotechnical aspects of diverse projects including tailings dam design, slope assessments, piling, foundations, and infrastructure.


Engage directly with clients to provide expert advice and build lasting relationships.


Maintain high standards of quality, safety, and performance in all technical deliverables.


JOB OVERVIEW


Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Geotechnical Engineering Discipline Lead is responsible for providing leadership, technical expertise, and strategic direction in the delivery and growth of geotechnical services across LN's diverse projects - including infrastructure, land development, and mining. This role includes leading investigations, analysis, and reporting, while mentoring engineering staff and supporting regional operations in project execution, hiring, and business development.


The successful candidate will play a key role in expanding our Geotechnical and Materials Testing service line, supporting CCIL-certified lab operations, and ensuring high-quality standards, safety, and best practices company-wide. This is a dynamic leadership opportunity for a results-driven professional passionate about technical excellence, client engagement, and organizational growth.


QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE


The ideal candidate is a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with 6+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering, including project management, technical design, and client engagement. A civil engineering degree with a geotechnical focus is required, along with hands-on expertise in investigations, slope stability, seepage modeling, and construction monitoring - particularly within Alberta's unique geological environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Technical Leadership: Providing expert guidance on geotechnical engineering principles and practices.


Project Management: Overseeing the planning, execution, and completion of geotechnical components of projects, including scoping, scheduling, and budgeting.


Design and Analysis: Conducting detailed engineering analysis, design, and reporting for projects involving soil, rock, groundwater, asphalt, concrete, etc.


Site Investigations: Planning and managing geotechnical investigations, including drilling programs, laboratory testing, and data analysis.


Report Writing: Preparing and reviewing technical reports, proposals, and other project documentation.


Mentorship and Guidance: Providing guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate geotechnical engineers.


Client Communication: Engaging with clients, providing geotechnical expertise, and building strong client relationships.


Quality Assurance: Ensuring the quality and accuracy of geotechnical deliverables, including designs, calculations, and reports.


Business Development: Contributing to the growth of the geotechnical discipline by identifying new business opportunities and participating in proposal development.


Collaboration: Working effectively with other disciplines, including survey, locating, and environmental.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES


SAFETY


Actively participate in corporate HSE Program


Actively participate in client HSE Programs ensuring requirements are understood and met

Support and participate in Safety Committee activities


Conduct project/field safety audits when required


PROJECTS AND OPERATIONS


Utilize your extensive experience to assist in maintaining and building strong client relationships and developing and growing the Geotechnical Service Line within LN for the long term


Provide leadership, project management, and expertise to manage Geotechnical Engineering projects and provide leadership and guidance to operational teams


Mentor, train, and develop junior to intermediate geotechnical engineering staff


Prepare and review technical proposals and reports


Collaborate with LN Regional Operations to provide geotechnical support and project collaboration on multi-discipline projects across Alberta and BC


Actively seek out new opportunities to grow the Service Line


Complete quotes, estimates, and pre-qualifications


Assist in local hiring and workforce management when requested by operations


Develop strong colleague relationships


WORKING CONDITIONS


This position is based in Edmonton, Alberta , with occasional travel to regional offices to support the development and growth of the Geotechnical Service Line.
