The Opportunity:



WSP has an exciting opportunity for a

Junior to Intermediate Geological/ Geotechnical Engineer or Engineering Geologist

with an interest in geohazard identification and mitigation, field mapping, geotechnical instrumentation installation and monitoring, and soil/rock logging to join our team in

Edmonton.



This is an opportunity for you to be involved in or lead interesting geotechnical engineering projects under a variety of diverse terrain and project conditions, throughout the province of Alberta and to leverage your experience with a team that is committed to growth, development and delivery of high-quality project outcomes.


The ideal candidate will be comfortable with the use of technology in the practice of Geological/ Geotechnical Engineering and directing and working in the field with project teams to support geologic and geotechnical field assessments and subsurface investigations. This position will include opportunities on a variety of projects such as linear alignments for pipelines, transportation corridors, and infrastructure settings. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated education or field experience in geomorphology, geohazards, the use of traditional and remote sensing datasets for the evaluation of geohazard sites, and geology of the Interior Plains physiographic region This position provides an opportunity to join a fast-paced team that provides solutions on geological, civil, and geotechnical engineering projects. The work entails a variety of office-related, project management, and outdoor "hands-on" activities, with a possibility to lead a team to both give and receive instructions, document activities, solve problems, and provide proactive communication.

What you can expect to do here:



You'll conduct all types of geotechnical, geological and geo-environmental projects, including organizing field investigations, interpreting results, making engineering decisions and judgments and writing technical reports. You will support and manage projects, with an emphasis on geohazard identification, investigation and mitigation, geotechnical instrumentation; and geotechnical engineering, design, and monitoring. You'll research and write technical reports summarizing geology with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation. You'll prepare data and visualizations such as geologic maps and cross sections, soil analyses, modeling results, and remote sensing data. You'll conduct or manage subsurface field geologic exploration tasks including advancement of boreholes, dynamic cone penetrometer testing, and test pit explorations and drilling activities for the installation of geotechnical instrumentation. You'll perform or review data compilations, borehole (and other) logs, GIS data analysis and management, site geology, and other related deliverables. You'll work on or manage projects of various sizes providing not only technical input, but also mentorship and support to junior staff. This could also include analysis and modeling of geotechnical designs. Projects you could be involved in include pipeline projects, transportation corridors, slope stability projects (local and regional), mining projects (closure, tailings dams), foundation investigations, construction oversight, project management, etc. You could work with and assist the materials testing department where geotechnical engineering assistance is required, supervise and coordinate field programs, preparation technical reports and contribute to the proposal process and liaise with clients as required, You may get to liaise with other offices to provide growth opportunities and gain additional mentoring and assistance from senior staff. Comply with safety guidelines and client/site-specific procedures which may include safely plans, PPE, the maintenance of sample collection, location data, laboratory documentation, and logbooks. Undertake self-development through training or course attendance.

What you'll bring to WSP:



Completion of a bachelor's degree in geological/ geotechnical engineering, geology, engineering geology, or related field from an accredited institution Postgraduate degree (Master's or Ph.D) in geological/ geotechnical engineering, geology would be an asset. Experience with geomorphology and surface processes. Analytical mindset, detail oriented, and experience with geological research techniques and protocols. Experience in using GIS and remote sensing data (e.g., Lidar, aerial imagery, geophysical data) to identify geologic hazards using remote sensing data would be an asset. Possess computer skills and have experience with computer software including Microsoft Office, basic data management applications, GIS experience a plus. Possessing geologic field skills and have experience in field mapping and identification of geologic hazards would be an asset. Registration (or eligible for registration) as a Professional Engineer/Geologist (P.Eng/P.Geo.) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) Practical relevant project experience, especially with a consultant, would be an asset. Strong written and oral communication (English) skills with strong skills in report writing and proposal writing. Strong leadership skills with a genuine desire to mentor and develop individuals and teams. Unrestricted Class 5 Driver's License that is valid in the province of Alberta. Desire to provide excellent practical client service and a commitment to technical excellence. Ability to be comfortable in remote settings and a willingness to perform a variety of tasks as needed to complete an assignment.
